The most inbred states in the United States aren’t necessarily the ones you’d expect. As we all know, this phenomenon is not a social taboo anymore. Some people even do it without considering themselves as blood-related.
The United States is a melting pot of cultures and ethnicities. But, as it turns out, there are still pockets of America that live in isolation and are closed off from the rest of the world.
These communities are the ones that have the highest number of inbreeding. This article will discuss inbreeding, its effects on human genes, and so much more.
The states with the highest incest incidence rates are; Kentucky, Maine, Delaware, Virginia, Maryland, Washington, Georgia, Oregon, Indiana, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Louisiana, Tennessee, South Carolina, North Carolina, West Virginia, Montana, Alabama, and South Dakota.
Incest is sexual intercourse between close relatives or persons who live together. Unlike many other sexual taboos, incest has been documented for virtually every human society for thousands of years.
Roughly 4% of the world’s population has engaged in sexual activity with someone from their family at some point in their lives.
In most cases, incest involves sexual activity between a child and a parent or sibling. Still, it can also include grandparents, uncles, aunts, half-siblings, first cousins, and some extended family members.
Incest is illegal in most countries and considered morally wrong by most people. It can be divided into three categories:
Inbreeding refers to the mating of genetically related individuals who share a common ancestor, which occurs in many species. In humans, it’s the process of reproducing with your close relatives.

The actual genetic makeup of those sperm and eggs might not be identical, but they share enough genetic information that their offspring will be more likely to inherit any bad genes.
It has been observed in many different species across the animal kingdom, but it is prevalent in domestic canids such as dogs, wolves, and coyotes.
It also happens naturally when two small groups of the same species live in isolation from each other and intermarry over generations.
In many species, there are no other options. But why would one want to mate with their sibling or parent? Why would they instead mate with someone “in the family”?

The United States has a long history of inbreeding, with about 250,000 of the population marrying a first cousin at some time in their family history.
With all the time spent on marriage and inbreeding, it’s essential to find out what the law says. It turns out that the laws about cousin marriage vary by state, and there are plenty of exceptions;
In the United States, a person may legally marry their first cousin if both individuals are over the age of consent (usually 18), regardless of whether they are male or female.
However, most states don’t recognize marriages between cousins greater than second cousins unless they are from states that allow first-cousin marriage. In those cases, it’s usually only allowed for very distant cousins.
In our 20- state list, we have found that the most incest occurs in the “Bible Belt,” where more than one way of life exists. This includes many different religions, which have been known to breed hate, intolerance, and incest because they are so close-minded.

HARRISONVILLE, Missouri -- A woman whose husband fathered four babies with one of the couple's daughters was sentenced to seven years in prison Tuesday after pleading guilty last week to child endangerment and hindering prosecution of a felony.
Judge Mike Wagner said he knew of animals in the wild that fought to protect their young and questioned why the 49-year-old mother didn't do the same.
"What is so frustrating to the court is there is no amount of time in prison that can give this young lady her childhood back," he said. "Your child suffered an unthinkable abuse, and you allowed that to happen. You will have to live with that for the rest of your life."
Three of the four children the woman's husband had with the couple's daughter died, including one whose body was found in a shallow grave in eastern Oklahoma where the family apparently lived for a short time. The bodies of two other babies were found in coolers on a rural Harrisonville property where the family lived in their mobile home.
The Associated Press is not identifying the parents to protect the victims' identities.
The trial for the victim's mother had been set to begin Tuesday. Under a plea deal, she will serve her seven-year sentence for child endangerment at the same time as her four-year sentence for hindering prosecution.
Hensley said the victim was eager to avoid another trial. The victim testified at her father's trial, divulging that her father began having sex with her when she was 5 years old. He was sentenced in June to life in prison after being convicted of charges that included second-degree murder and abandonment of a corpse.
The murder charge stemmed from the death of the victim's third child, who fell ill and didn't receive appropriate medical care. The victim's first child, born when she was just 14, died after falling off a couch; the fourth baby was stillborn. Only the second child survived.
The victim, now 21, sobbed during her mother's sentencing hearing as Cass County prosecutor Teresa Hensley wrapped her arm around the young woman.
"It hurts me to know my mom could have been there for me and helped me," the victim said in a handwritten statement that Hensley read to the judge. "I wish I had a mom to talk to and hang out with, but that will never happen."
The victim said in the statement that she now could move on with her life with her surviving son and soon-to-be husband. The boy was placed in foster care when the allegations were first made, and Hensley said the victim is seeing him.
