In memory of the «Young Guard»

On February 9, 1943 - In the Gremuchy Forest near the city of Rovenki, the leaders of the underground Komsomol organisation "Young Guard", Oleg Koshevoy, Lyubov Shevtsova, Semyon Ostapenko, Dmitry Ogurtsov, and Viktor Subbotin, were shot by the Nazis.

In the summer of 1942, the German-fascist invaders occupied the city of Krasnodon. Almost immediately, underground organisations created by communists and Komsomol members to fight against the occupiers began to emerge in the city. On September 30, youth underground groups united into a single organisation called "Young Guard".

The headquarters of the underground association included Ivan Turkenech, Oleg Koshevoy, Lyubov Shevtsova, Sergei Tyulenin, Viktor Tretyakevich, Ivan Zemnukhov, and Vasily Levashov.

For half a year, the Komsomol members carried out sabotage and actions against the occupation authorities, preventing the deportation of citizens to work in Germany. In response to the actions of the underground fighters, the Nazis began repressions. In January 1943, they managed to uncover the organisation thanks to the testimony of traitors.

On January 5, mass arrests of members of "Young Guard" began. The detainees were brutally tortured and tormented by the Nazis, but they failed to break the young communists. Most members of "Young Guard" were brutally executed on January 15-16, 1943.

Oleg Koshevoy, Lyubov Shevtsova, Semyon Ostapenko, Dmitry Ogurtsov, and Viktor Subbotin were transferred from Krasnodon to Rovenki and shot in the Gremuchy Forest near the city on February 9, 1943.

Most of the young anti-fascist heroes were not even 18 years old at the time of their deaths, yet the Young Guards considered it their duty to fight against the inhumane enemy. After the arrest, the Komsomol members withstood the tortures and torments of the fascist executioners, placing love for their homeland and loyalty to Marxist-Leninist ideals above their own lives.

The feat of the Young Guards became a symbol of the unyielding will of Soviet citizens to fight against the German-fascist invaders.
