The internet has a new favorite meme, and it's not one that's easily explained. If you've been on Twitter or Tumblr recently, you've likely started to see an image of an exasperated woman eating salad , with the caption: "Are you serious? Right in front of my salad?"
The clip (and accompanying quote) originated from an NSFW scene in an adult film. To make a long story short: a woman enjoying a bowl of salad realizes that two men in her kitchen are engaging in bedroom activities and questions why they'd do it in front of her salad. The situation has quickly transformed into a meme used to express indignation, and the actress's annoyed facial expression has gone fully viral.
Naturally, due to its origins, usage of the meme ranges from highly risqué to totally innocent and suitable for work based on context . . . but good luck explaining it to anybody who asks what it means. In fact, your best plan of action might be to send them the link to this post and let them find out the rest for themselves!
We've gathered a few work-appropriate examples of the meme in action here, but be forewarned: you might not look at your salad the same way again.

If you just can't believe someone's behavior, may we recommend the latest expression of disbelief sweeping the nation: "Right in front of my salad!?"
Let's set the scene — a young woman enjoys a salad on a kitchen countertop near a pair of aproned friends. The salad in question lies between her and the two kindly men, and a few bites into her healthsome treat, she notices that their powers of conversation are somewhat diminished and oddly restrained.
She, quite reasonably, investigates as to the nature of their distraction, only to find that the two young men are rather boldly enjoying a rather indiscreet sex romp with one another right there... in front of her salad.
So this is a scene from the porn classic Private Lessons 3 , uploaded to Men.com about two weeks ago. As we all know, porn has given us some of the most nuanced dialogue in any medium, and this recent addition is no exception. Its versatility, indignation, and deft critique of our tense modern age has lent itself very well to the internet's many needs.

If you've never watched the non-pornographic scenes from porno flicks, then you're missing out on some quality comedic content. I'm not just talking about the terrible acting, nor am I talking about the ridiculous set-ups into the naughty scenarios that the characters in the pornos find themselves into all of a sudden.
Everyone in the movie knows that at the end of the day, people are just going to forward through those parts anyway, so they can say and do the most ridiculous things in the world that they want.
Like this woman disgusted by the fact that two people are going at it, right in front of her salad:
The adult film actors blatant disregard for salad aside, people online had no choice but to empathize with the salad-eating woman, and not only empathize, but use her line as a meme.
And it started catching on, because, seriously, who starts pounding away and getting down and dirty in front of a person who's just trying to eat their salad? An inconsiderate couple of people, that's who.
You could use it for pretty much any scenario, not just NSFW ones. Although the idea of someone doing the no-pants dance right in front of your salad is probably the funniest iteration of this meme.
Some were dying to know the origin behind such a crisp meme.
But the answer was right in front of them the entire time.
Which was shocking to many, or maybe they were just pretending to shocked and that they never watched the video before.
But be warned, before you look too much into it...
Well the meme is helping some people consider new career paths, at least.
