Important news from Yakutsk. Lenin Square is restoring its original name

The decision to rename a part of Lenin Square in Yakutsk to Republic Square has been declared invalid. The Yakutsk court today granted the communists' lawsuit.

The court ruled that paragraph 2 of the Yakutsk City Duma's decision of February 26, 2025, "on assigning the name 'Republic Square' to a part of Lenin Square on the eastern side of Lenin Avenue", is invalid.

The lawsuit had been under review since September 2025. The administrative plaintiffs were the recently deceased Viktor Gubarev and Vyacheslav Kulichkin.

At the time, the renaming of the central square in the capital of Yakutia sparked debates not only in the republic but also at the federal level. The leadership of the Communist Party of the Russian Federation voiced its protest.

The regional branch of "United Russia" supported the change of the historically established name. Yakutsk residents proposed to put the issue to a referendum, but the speaker of the city council, Albert Semenov, refused.

The news of the court's decision is welcome. However, we do not rule out the possibility of our opponents filing an appeal to the Supreme Court of the Sakha Republic (Yakutia).
