On the other hand, if iMovie 9 is installed and running smoothly there probably isn't much benefit in updating to iMovie 9.0.9. The only reason that you would need 9.0.9 is to be able to upgrade to iMovie 10 that no longer can be done.
So upgrading to iMovie 9 will not solve your problem. The solution is to upgrade your operating system to current High Sierra, and your iMovie version to current 10.1.8. If you want to try upgrading to iMovie 9, you need to update iMovie 8 to highest version, and from there upgrade to iMovie 9, and from there update to higher versions of iMovie 9.

The two folders taken together comprise your iMovie 9 projects and media. From within iMovie 10 you can do a File/Update Projects and Events and that will update all of your iMovie 9 projects and events into iMovie 10 where they can be edited. As you have found, iMovie 10 has a very different interface and file structure than iMovie 9.

I have already gone to download iMovie from this link, but upon trying to install it I get the message that I need a version of iMovie that is older than 9.0. I tried to download iMovie 8.0.6, and I got the message that 8.0.6 is a part of a package I can't install.

iMovie 9 projects won't play on your 64 bit Monterey operating system because iMovie 9 is an incompatible 32 bit application. The iMovie 9 media located in the Events folder would still be playable.

Help? I recently took some video clips with a gopro 3.5. My son downloaded them Imovie on his laptop which has imovie 9.0.9 he copied the files so that I can work with them on my IMac which has Imovie 9.0.4 I cannot load them into Imovie. I tested another video to see if it uploads properly and it did without a problem.

iMovie for Mac 10.0.3 does not import all projects which exist in iMovie 9.0.9. The projects that do not show up in 10.0.3 are clearly there in 9.0.9 and the ource is also clearly in iPhoto.
Existing iMovie 9 projects should still work with IMovie 9 but any editing done in iMovie 10 won't be visible in iMovie 9. I think you need to use iMovie version 9.0.9.
The current version of iMovie for OS X 10.9 Mavericks is iMovie 10 available from the App Store I believe as a free upgrade. All of the iWork (Pages, Keynote, Numbers) and iLife (iMovie, iPhoto, iTunes, Aperture) were upgraded for compatibiity with Mavericks.
