Im 13. Jahrhundert, nach dem Mongoleneinfall, sammelte der türkische Prinz Osman Bey die Türken unter seinem Banner und stellte eine kampfbereite Armee auf. Aber es gab keine Einheit in der christlichen Armee, edle Militärführer konkurrierten miteinander und die Serben wurden besiegt. Viele Soldaten fielen in der Schlacht, der serbische Prinz Lazar wurde gefangen genommen. Der St.-Veits-Tag, Vidovdan, ist zu einem Trauertag für Serben geworden. Nach dem Fall von Byzanz wurde das Osmanische Reich gegründet, das die europäische und asiatische Türkei - Rumelien und Anatolien - vereinte.

In früheren Jahrhunderten war die Situation anders. Und die über die Oberfläche des Planeten verstreuten primitiven Stämme und mächtigen Staaten in den bewundernswerten Zivilisationen Ägyptens, Mesopotamiens, Indiens und Chinas und selbst der großen alten Hellas und Rom konnten den Zeitgenossen keine Vorstellung von der globalen Natur der Entwicklung geben . Der Blick des Menschen auf den Weltall beschränkte sich auf Nachbarländer und halbphantastische Geschichten „erfahrener Menschen“ über ferne Länder. Ihr Verständnis der historischen Zeit umfasste normalerweise nur das Leben weniger Generationen, und während dieser Zeit war es unmöglich, Veränderungen in der traditionellen Lebensweise zu erfassen. Natürlich haben Denker und Wissenschaftler damals über die Einheit der Welt nachgedacht, aber diese Gedanken waren rein spekulativ, und die Menschen konnten sie in der Praxis nicht überprüfen.
Der Missionsimpuls und die Glaubenskriege des Mittelalters, die allmähliche Erschließung des Ozeans durch den Menschen brachten Länder und Völker einander näher. Diese Annäherung war jedoch nicht freiwillig. Die Geschichte hat sich so entwickelt, dass Westeuropa ab dem 15. Jahrhundert. weltweite Expansion durchgeführt (d.h. Wie und wodurch konnte die westliche Zivilisation vorankommen? In Europa hob sich das Handwerk der Städter deutlich von der Landwirtschaft ab, die Produkte der Werkstätten wurden gegen die Produkte der Bauern eingetauscht. Die Stadt war nicht nur ein Zentrum des Handwerks und des Handels, sondern verfügte über eine Selbstverwaltung, die die Macht der Feudalherren stark einschränkte. Es gab Gesetze, die den einfachen Mann irgendwie vor der Willkür der „Mächtigen dieser Welt“, vor der Willkür des Staates schützten. Die Einkaufs- und Verkaufsbeziehungen, der Handel und die Vermittlungsbeziehungen im Allgemeinen waren hoch entwickelt. Im Osten waren die Herrscher souverän über Leben und Eigentum ihrer Untertanen, und ihre Befehle traten an die Stelle des Gesetzes. Handwerker des Ostens (die die Europäer oft in ihrem Können übertrafen) arbeiteten nicht für den Markt, sondern dienten den Herrschern und ihrem Gefolge.
