Almost gave this a 5/5 but settled on a 1/5.
Easily the best nazisploitation movie I have seen so far. It contains some very vile stuff but remains surprisingly watchable. That's likely because it actually has decent plot development instead of it just being a quick succession of harrowing sequences.
Dyanne Thorne is magnetic and steals the show.
I really didn't expect George Buck Flower to show up in this.
we are asked over and over again to instrumentally forget, correct, rewrite, reify atrocity so that it makes sense so that it can properly be examined as something bad that happened a long time ago and now we know better and are more enlightened and would never do such a thing again and it wasn't us who did it anyway it was done by people somehow inherently, categorically worse, people we are prevented from being by the distance of history, the strength of our institutions, the decency of our moral heritage, but knowledge of atrocity having once occurred makes us feel bad, kind of harshes daily life you know so we make an argument for cathartic violence, that x was…
I cannot quite wrap my head around whom this would appeal to on an erotic level. So you want a story where a man is forced to fuck for his life and survives because he can keep fucking without getting off. Why would setting that in a concentration camp make that somehow more appealing? Especially when it takes pains to show medical experimentation? Why mix softcore pornography and the worst atrocities of the Nazis? I feel like not getting sexual appeal the nazisploitation subgenre is probably a good thing, however.
The fact that I appreciate its shocking audacity probably speaks poorly of me.

The absolute dregs of bottom of the fermenting barrel slime of exploitation, sexploitation and naziploitation chiselled from the wood and melted down into a bubbling mucous of sheer audacity.
I mean, the absolute bollocks on this film. Completely shameless in every sense of the word, deplorable, immoral and wrong on every level.

So I am pretty sure I have COVID and have had it since Tuesday. The Rapid Tests have been saying otherwise, but my doctor said that's a common problem with this new variant and based on my symptoms I am in COVID's grasp. I had to laugh at this disclaimer at the start of this; trying to pretend it's anything other than unadulterated exploitation seems like a fool's errand. I guess it's probably tongue in cheek though. Dyanne Thorne gamely displays her commanding assets as the TITular Ilsa but the tone of this thing left me cold. It's probably going a bit far to say it plays out like Carry On Concentration Camping but there is a huge camp factor that really undermines the horror of the relatively graphic atrocities on show. A real feel-good motion picture event.
Ranks up there with Thriller: A Cruel Picture and Farewell Uncle Tom as one of the most absurdly brutal films of the 70s and maybe all time. Unlike the earlier Love Camp 7 (also produced by Dave Friedman) and The Cut-Throats , Ilsa is less of a sexploitation film and more of an insanely violent horror film. The nudity is so near-constant and blasé that it almost fades into the background, allowing the film to focus and linger on all of the gross, graphic torture. Dyanne Thorne is pretty fantastic as the title character, even though her terrible fake German accent changes from line to line. Sick stuff, but essential sleaze.
Watching Death Proof and the double feature that it was a part of back in 2019 opened me up to the weird world exploitation movies and their many subgenres, and as you can probably tell by some of my recent diary entries, I remain fascinated by them to this day. Along with watching Grindhouse , I watched some behind-the-scenes interviews about the fake trailers that were played before and in between Planet Terror and Death Proof , and in the interview for Werewolf Women of the SS , Rob Zombie mentioned Ilsa: She Wolf of the SS as one of the inspirations for his Nazisploitation tribute. Well this was an interesting choice for a Friday night. Brutal AF in ways that would make BLOODSUCKING FREAKS blush yet for all its obvious Nazi provocation isn’t as poorly made a film as one would guess and has a hell of a final act. Remake, anyone? No? Ok.
Shame really the torture pornin' feels so dated and unintentionally funny. Great, great art nonetheless: Its aura still speaks louder than any words could, even 43 years later. Monumental in every way.
