IKEA and Teenage Engineering preview their collaboration on Instagram
Teenage Engineering is known for its wonky-looking yet functional synths and speakers , while IKEA furniture fills college (and folks who still live like it's college) apartments. Their powers combined has produced...some neat, boldly-colored speakers, actually. On its Instagram, Ikea just posted a sneak peek at their upcoming line of collaborated products built "so that you can host your party, wherever you may be."
Per the photo, the new line FREKVENS (translated to "frequency") looks to include an LED box, a spotlight and, of course, speakers -- all the tools needed to party. That might not be everything: When IKEA first announced the line last June, the company mentioned it would include an electronic choir, vinyl player, party lighting "and everything else you need in order to throw a really good music party wherever you are."
Their ideal use case? Drop by IKEA for dinner party supplies and add some go-anywhere party gear to your cart.
"When you are younger you usually come up with the idea of a party the same day and I think a lot of people use IKEA that way. 'I'm going to have a party, I need some glasses, napkins, candles and stuff and will go to IKEA to get it.' For us, it is about finding a reason to make and play some music. Thinking about the totality of what you need for a party is a good start", Teenage Engineering CEO and head of design Jesper Kouthoofd said in an Ikea blog post back in September.
Sadly, you'll have to wait 'til next year to bring the party: The FREKVENS line is slated to arrive in IKEA stores in February 2019.

Teenage Engineering’s IKEA collection lands in stores next month
If IKEA's Sonos speakers are a little bland for your taste, you might be happy to know that the FREKVENS line, a collaboration between IKEA and Teenage Engineering, arrives in February. The collection is meant to get funky house parties started, and it includes everything from speakers to spotlights, spill-resistant furniture and a raincoat -- all with Teenage Engineering's signature colorful quirkiness.
The core of the FREKVENS collection (FREKVENS translates to "frequency") is a portable, modular music system. For $70, you can get the Bluetooth-enabled, 8-inch-tall speaker, which claims to have a 10-hour battery life and comes in black and red or black and yellow. If you need more bass, there's a $150 speaker with a subwoofer, and for $20, you can put the party in your pocket with a four-inch portable speaker that has a belt clip.
The speakers promise the high-quality sound we've come to expect from Teenage Engineering , and they're meant to be paired with the FREKVENS LED spotlight and LED multi-use lights, as well as the the light up speaker base. Of course, the line includes furniture, like barstools, an end table and an ottoman. There's also dishware, a blanket and a tote bag -- and a $25 raincoat, so you can party rain or shine.
"We've wanted to make something that feels like IKEA, and at the same time challenge how we perceive them today," said Teenage Engineering founder and head of design Jesper Kouthoofd. "It's exciting to explore new territories, push the boundaries and challenge each other. IKEA is furniture, meatballs and soon... Party."

Beloved Swedish tech company Teenage Engineering and Ikea have joined forces for a collaboration for the ages. Their limited-time Frekvens collection , "rolling out" at U.S. Ikea stores from now until February 1 (though store inventory will vary), includes hot items like a modular Bluetooth speaker system, LED spotlights with tripod stands, tables and chairs, dinnerware sets, and my favorite, aluminum foil-like metallic raincoats.
The Frekvens (it means "frequency" in Swedish) collection is "inspired by music, one of the most powerful and uniting cultural forces in society," according to Ikea. All of the items are designed to get a party started and bumpin'. Literally, you could buy everything in the collection, drop them into your living room, and charge for your mini rave. DJ skills are, obviously, not included with any of the products. You'll have to bring your own hits to your party.
No smarts at all — You won't find any "smart" features or AI in the speakers or lights. Besides Bluetooth for streaming music, these are dumb speakers all the way, and we like it that way. It's refreshing to see new tech without Alexa this or Google Assistant that.
