The real plus side to living in Eugene is it’s proximity to so many beautiful natural areas. It you enjoy being outdoors, I would not cross Eugene off your list. If you are more of a city person, some of my favorite cities I have visited in the US are: 1) Portland, Maine 2)Kingston, NY 3) Portland, OR 4)Bellingham, WA 5) Cincinnati/Columbus Ohio. Like anywhere along the west coast, there’s plenty most will agree sucks - 1) cost of living outpacing wages, 2) homelessness (addiction/mental health crisis) - but at least our community is a leader/model in identifying solutions to help. Not as green as you might think in Eugene proper--more like farm country. Homeless people are welcomed, which sounds good, but means that you'll have to deal with them regularly, especially near the downtown. Overall a fine enough place to live. I have lived in Eugene my whole life and always in south Eugene and it’s great. All the schools are slowly being rebuilt Amazon pool was redone a while back the new kids sports facility is amazing. And they just broke ground on a new YMCA. I don’t think crime is really any worse/better than it’s always been. The homeless situation is.
