Free-to-play Japanese browser game Idol Wars Online has been localized for Western audiences with an English-language version now available on the Nutaku gaming portal. As a producer/idol group manager, players recruit J-Pop stars and train them to form the best idol group in Japan.
There are more than 80 aspiring J-Pop stars to recruit, and new idols are added each month with additional story episodes. The idols train and increase their skills by delivering live performances where they attempt to win over the audience. Completing “performance quests” and winning live battles give the idols more experience and unlock additional abilities.
Players can also create “Productions,” or guilds, to battle rival productions in major online competitions called “Dreamfests.” A Dreamfest event can include up to 50 participants at a time.
Idol Wars Online can be played on both desktop and mobile browsers.

J-Pop is massive! Those that know this are reading the opening statement as old news, and those that are scratching their heads are really running late for this rather, cute, catchy bus and they need to get a move on. Lucky for all involved online flash game creator Nutaku.com is already one step ahead as Idol Wars Online is bringing the cut and thrust world of being a J-Pop Manager to your gaming life.
From the initial loading of Idol Wars Online most Nutaku flash game players may recognise the opening menu system, with it’s classic, very easy to use layout; however this latest offering in the huge line of anime games holds something rather different. Whereas before our numerous worlds have been occupied by countless meanies, and huge bugs that want to see you come to an unhappy ending, this J-Pop Manager sees you tackle the constantly moving world of being the greatest record producer ever. This may not sound overly gripping at first, but within a few turns and when you scout a rival, you’ll be training your singers at the cost of dropping rare backing singers to push your J-Pop band to the top.
You’re characters still come with defence, attack and all the normal stats expected, though these are used to make to singer much more powerful in their skills. However, your special moves come in the form of dances, rabbit ears, winks to the crowd etc. Gone are the characters armed to the teeth, but you’re not missing it at all as you become more aware of this new world, and you’re pushing you group further forward by discarding others to train your strongest members.
Entering the game you are offered in-game gifts for going through the tutorial and if you don’t choose that option you’re making a big mistake. Here the basics are walked through, and Nutaku.com does this well, even when you’ve passed the tutorial much-needed prompts throughout Idol Wars Online appear to make sure you’re never left scratching your head.
Down the left side of your homescreen the main icons read Gacha, Live Battle, Quest, Scouting, Unit, Lesson and Dream Fest. You’ll rapidly grow accustomed to Quest, Unit, Lesson and Gacha as these four areas are truly what keeps a popular J-Pop band high in the Production Rank.
The Quest is obvious – going out on quests brings you in contact with other “Idols” and also Rivals who are a fantastic source of gifts, cash and other lovely things. However you need to keep up your popularity otherwise these rivals will repay your hopeful glances with disappointment. Unit is an area of the game where you need to maintain you J-Pop Band, making sure that you have the right team for the right job. It’s in Lesson that you turn you J-Pop Band into the Mega-Stars as you cruelly dash the careers of others to give your top stars better lessons; you can also use items earned along the way to increase your stars greater stats. Gacha is obvious; here are treats! If you’ve picked up any tokens upon your travels bring them here and you can hopefully win something great including Super Rare singers. However you may get some much-needed items to “Awaken” you top singer and take them to the next level.
The game isn’t just questing however as twice a day the Dream Fest comes into play, and here it’s up to you to show the world how great your J-Pop band actually is. It’s not a case of hitting “Skip” and hoping for success you need to work for your points in Dream Fest.
Idol Wars Online is a completely different style of game from Nutaku.com . Out go the fantasy creatures and apocalyptic wizards and in comes the J-Pop. It’s fun, it’s engaging and you find yourself feeling like a heartless Simon Cowell wannabe as you kick out seven rookie singers for your one great cat-ear wearing, winking idol.
