Behind every great invention or innovation, there has been an idea. As humans, we pride ourselves on our creativity, and the wonderful things that we are capable of making, and behind all of that, you can find ideas leading us to progress. But what is it that makes an idea cool, or exciting, or worth talking about? If you ever find yourself wondering these questions, all you have to do is watch a TEDx talk to find out.
Founded in 1984, TED is an organization that has been around for a long time, but really hit its stride in the age of the internet. The TED & TEDx conferences are often known for famous, brilliant people sharing the kinds of groundbreaking ideas that they think the public deserves to hear. Once, around the end of 7th grade, I asked one of my teachers, “Can I ever get on the TED or TEDx stage?” The answer I got was one that I really didn’t appreciate at the time, but think I understand better now: “no, but you can always try, I don’t think anyone in our school had ever spoken at the TED or TEDx stage.” With the huge reputation that TED & TEDx have, with brilliant ideas spread by people all around the world, I get why it said that, but it really motivated me to think about what it is that makes an idea “worth spreading.”
At my school, we always watch TEDx videos in class for educational purposes, but we're always the “viewers” or the “listeners,” and just sit passively while listening to these brilliant ideas. The more I sat around listening, the more determined I felt to become one of these people myself. Honestly, during these talks, sometimes it felt like I was the only one paying attention. I love hearing ideas from different people sharing their experiences, so I’m probably the “weird kid,” but literally no one else in my class loves watching TED & TEDx talks that are like 15 minutes long… Again, except me.
So, as the “weird kid” who loves watching 15 minute long public speaking videos, it didn’t take long for me to decide to try to give my own TEDx talk. Easy. No big deal, right? Wrong. Starting from that day until I got accepted, my day was
THINKING - DEVELOPING - WRITING - WRITING SUBMISSIONS
It was during the summer break, so I had a lot of time to work on submitting an application to different TEDx organizations. To those of you who are curious about the application process, let me put it like this: I haven’t applied for any jobs before, but it felt like it was about as easy as applying for NASA. After a few weeks, I finally got my first response. I was so excited that I could hardly contain it, and I anxiously opened the email to find out that I had been……
I felt completely lost. I didn’t know why my idea was not good enough for them to select me as one of the speakers for the year. I felt aimless and helpless, and spent a lot of time talking to different people that I thought would be able to help me in this process. Eventually, after many others, I found someone who specialized in teaching English online to help me find the inspiration I needed. He told me that if I had an idea that I really believed in, one that I really believed could make a difference, then that was all that counted.
Day after day, as I worked on my concept, I thought longer and harder about what an “idea worth spreading” even is. This process was hard and tough, and took me a whole lot of time as I worked on coming up with ideas, and then getting rid of them, and then coming with new ideas, but eventually, I still managed to complete it. After a long and difficult process, I finally managed to get accepted by a TEDx talk in Eustis, Florida, and so far in my life, it’s the proudest I’ve ever been of any achievement.
But let’s get back to the main topic: What is the true meaning of “Ideas Worth Spreading”? For me, this means that if you have something you believe in, really believe in, and are willing to work as hard as you can for it, then you have an idea worth spreading. All good ideas deserve to be heard, and you are the only person who can decide whether or not your idea is a good one.
Anyone who has an idea that is worth spreading, no matter how small or how big the idea is, is worthy enough to bring their idea to a stage. I’ll be honest, I was rejected around 10 times by different TEDx organizations, and one of my speaking coaches was rejected 35 times by TEDx events. So let me end this with some advice: Never, ever give up on your idea. If you believe your idea is worth spreading, then you fit the spirit of TED & TEDx. I am unbelievably thankful that I was selected by TEDxEustis, and the only reason for that is because I never gave up trying. The submission process is hard, but the only person who can decide whether or not your idea is worth spreading is yourself, and only yourself. So, do you have an idea worth spreading?
