When was ice cream invented?
Experts say the history of ice cream began as far back as 550 B.C. It probably didn’t look quite like what we think of as ice cream today, but it was surprisingly close! Ancient civilizations have been gathering and flavoring snow for as long as they knew they could eat it, and similar flavored ice treats have evolved over time.

The first real ice cream, as we know it today, was likely first developed in India with the dish known as kulfi, which was invented sometime in the 16th century. It’s a flavored, frozen dairy treat that’s a lot like the ice cream you might find in the freezer, but with a thicker, creamier consistency and a little more zing.

How is ice cream made?
Ice cream is traditionally made by combining cream, salt, and some kind of flavoring in a large, cold container. The container is agitated or mixed, and the salt helps the liquid get below freezing. As it’s churned and mixed, the whole concoction partially freezes and thickens, becoming creamy and flavorful.
