From the sharp crunch of blues legend Stevie Ray Vaughan to the searing metal leads of Slayer, the Tube Screamer is capable of outputting an immense range of different tones and is used in many different ways.
It has also been hugely influential on the subsequent generations of overdrive pedals, with no end of clones being manufactured by pedal makers the world over.
However, in the three decades since its initial release, there have been a number of different Tube Screamer models released. In this guide we’re going to look at the two most popular, the TS9 and TS808 and compare the differences to help you choose between them.

The Ibanez TS808 is the reissue of the original Tube Screamer first released in the late 1970s.
It uses slightly different circuitry and components than the TS9 that came after it, including the use of Japanese JRC-4558 microchips that many claim is responsible for its distinctive sound.
The TS808 has a mellower, smoother overdrive effect than the TS9 with a warmer overall sound. It costs more due to its use of analog circuitry which better imitates the sound of a tube amp being driven into overdrive.
It has a similar output level to the TS9, meaning it can drive a lot of gain, making clean amps sound distorted and sending already distorted amps into full high-gain metal territory.
Initially released in a production run lasting from 1981 to 1985, the TS9 is very similar to the TS808, but with some changes to the circuitry and components used, which results in a different tone.
Initially designed to be paired with the solid state transistor amps that became popular in the early 1980s, the TS9 has a higher gain output with a more aggressive overall sound.
While the TS808 sounds fairly dark and warm, the TS9 is much brighter and the characteristic mid-range boost that all Tube Screamers deliver is even more pronounced.
It has a subtle low-end cut which results in a tighter, more precise sound and the overdrive compresses the signal more than with the original TS808.
It is also a lot cheaper, due to its digital circuitry and more common components.
While the TS808 is widely considered to be the better pedal due to its warmer sound and all-analog circuitry, there is a lot of gear-snobbery at play as the TS9 is better for some applications.
Its true that if you’re after that characteristic, crispy blues tone made famous by Stevie Ray Vaughan and Rory Gallagher, the TS808 is probably the best option. Its fuller, smoother sound sits much better in a blues band mix and brings the most out of guitars with single coil pickups, which can sound a little too harsh and brittle when paired with the TS9.
However, the Tube Screamer has become so popular and celebrated because it has many applications apart from just that blues sound.
If you’re a metal or hard rock guitarist, a guitar with humbuckers into a high gain amp, the TS9’s brighter, more precise sound may be your best option. The mid-boost and low end cut will help tighten up the sound of an already distorting amp, making intricate riffs and solos sound clearer and more defined.
The TS9 also pairs very well with wooly sounding amps and effects pedals. Put in front of an Orange amp or old school Laney Supergroup, it helps define and sculpt the sound into something that cuts through a full band mix much better.
Both the TS808 and TS9 sound great when put just after fuzz pedals as well. Fuzz pedals such as the Big Muff tend to scoop the mids, resulting in a perceived lack of volume as the guitar gets lost in the mix. Placing a TS9 after a fuzz pedal adds a much needed mid boost and its brighter sonic character lends clarity to the tone.
As a general rule, players looking for blues, classic rock and country tones should opt for the TS808, while players looking for a more defined, modern tone will find the TS9 better suits their needs.
However, there are countless exceptions to this rule. For example, modern blues master Joe Bonamassa uses a TS9, while metal guitarists such as Metallica’s Kirk Hammet and Dream Theater’s John Petrucci use TS808s.
Therefore, while the style you play can go some way to informing which model to choose, both can be used across every genre imaginable, so the ultimate decision lies in which sound you prefer – the vintage, warm overdrive of the TS808 or the brighter, tight and modern sounding TS9.
