IRS Announces Tax Filing Deadline Extension Amid System Outages

Washington, D.C. – April 10, 2025 – The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) has announced an unexpected extension for federal tax filers, pushing the deadline from April 15 to May 17, 2025, following widespread technical issues with its online filing system.

The decision comes after thousands of taxpayers reported errors and delays when attempting to submit returns through the IRS’s IRS Free File and Direct File platforms. Agency officials confirmed that a 'critical system failure' disrupted e-filing services for nearly 24 hours, prompting the extension to alleviate taxpayer stress.

'This extension ensures that all Americans have ample time to file accurately without penalty,' said IRS Commissioner Daniel Werfel in a press briefing. 'We understand the frustration caused by these disruptions and are working around the clock to resolve them.'

The IRS emphasized that the extension applies only to federal income tax returns, though many states are expected to follow suit. Taxpayers owing payments can still avoid late fees by submitting an estimated payment by the original April 15 deadline.

Experts advise filers to monitor the IRS website for updates and consider filing as soon as possible to avoid last-minute complications. This marks the third deadline extension in five years, raising questions about the agency’s aging IT infrastructure.
