THERE are people who register with the Internal Revenue Commission (IRC) and get their Taxpayer Identification Number (TIN) but do not operate any business, says commissioner-general Sam Koim.
Koim said there were businesses operating in areas where the commission had no office.
The IRC is conducting a taxpayer survey to establish which businesses are operating with a TIN, their location and the types of business.
“That’s the project we are doing and we will verify and build that database,” Koim said.
The information will be shared with provincial governments.
Koim said a taxpayer services project which involved awareness would also be rolled out soon.
“We would like to make sure that everybody is aware of the value of paying taxes and the benefits there are in paying taxes and the punishment of not paying taxes,” he said.
“We will use a number of channels to reach taxpayers. One of those channels is the partnership with provincial governments.
“We are doing content development. We have some external support from the Australian Taxpayer office.”
