IMO - Link Shortener

IMO - Link Shortener

mαplє

So here my thought on the usage of the link shortener service. Think of it as a bit.lycutt.ly etc.

I see two reasons why people use these services.

First (1), to shorten a link.

Second (2), to get analytics (no. of clicks etc.)

When we put the long link, these services will return a randomly generated string right, for, e.g., bit.ly/3akDzn. This is already fine. You get a shortened link ✅, and you can use it in a poster or message ✅.

Some services provide a feature where we can customize the back half of the link right, e.g., bit.ly/SurveyQ1. Remain short but enough to tell people the purpose of the link.

The issues are when people:

1) Misunderstood the concept; People customize the back half of the link just to become even longer—for example, bit.ly/spmsejarahpapercollections. Yes, this link will clearly describe its content; however, it looks messy, reduces the conversion rate, and affects other people's productivity to type the link in some cases. Idk if they want to analytics feature, but it doesn't bother the link lengthiness.

2) Don't know where and when to use it.

Okay, so when you should use it?

  • If you have a long, ugly link. You want to make a poster, but the long link will affect the design, and it will look messy, so you can short the link and use it inside your poster.
  • You want to track the number of people, click the link. You can take action based on the numbers.

When shouldn't we use it?

  • For apps/site that provides its own link shortener tool. For example, on Twitter and LinkedIn, no matter the length you put in your tweet, it will shorten it for us. People that see our post can predict what is the link is going to bring them.
  • Another example is the Google Form link; it will generate a long link by default, but it has a built-in option to shorten the link for, e.g., forms.gle/hdd891VVi. USE THAT.
  • When the link is already short and already make sense to people. Remember, not all time we want to use the link shortener.
  • * I have more in mind but idk how to explains ahhaha.

Okay, enough until that; keep in mind that all the above is my PERSONAL OPINION. I might be wrong also, do ask me if you need further clarification. You are free to do whatever you want, though. This world is yours remember that?
