II. 2. God Stork

II. 2. God Stork

Bogdan Georgievich Lisitsa

El is the name of God, Who acts in the beginning. Different ancient peoples called Him:

"Ilu, Ilahu" - Ugaritic language;

"Aylon, Elon" - Phoenician language;

"Alaha" - Syriac language;

"Allah, Allahu, Ilah" - Arabic language;

"Elaha" - Judeo-Aramaic language;

"Elohim, Eloah, Eloha" - Hebrew language.

This word in all its variants means the same thing: God, comes from "Enlil / leleka / Stork". The word "El" was used in the Assyrian and Babylonian dialects of the Akkadian language as a general term for deities. Il / Ilu / El is the creator of the world, the father of many gods and all living things, the lord of time. "Creator of the gods", "Creator of all creations", "Eternal father" - these are his names in Ugarit.

El can manifest himself through visions and dreams and send angels. Ancient people imagined El as a kind, wise and merciful old man, whose distinctive features are passivity and inaction.

Stork is a stork in English. Starik is the same word in Russian, meaning "old man".

Stork = Starik

He was depicted with a high horned tiara, long-bearded, in long clothes, sitting on a throne and accepting sacrifices. His palace stood on the mountain where the Ugaritic gods lived, "at the mouth of the River, at the source of both Oceans." God El / Elóah / Elohim was the head of the ancient Israelite pantheon, the pan-Semitic supreme God.

After some time, ideas appeared that El-Ilu, standing high above the world, did not rule it directly. Lower deities began to rule the world, argue and fight. Temples were built for them, while temples to El were rare.

The following texts from the book of Genesis demonstrate the primacy of the concept of El (God) in relation to Yahweh / Jehovah:

And he shall be thy spokesman unto the people: and he shall be, even he shall be to thee instead of a mouth, and thou shalt be to him instead of God (El).

(Exodus 4:16)

2 I am the LORD (Yahweh) thy God (Elohim), which have brought thee out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage.

3 Thou shalt have no other gods (Elohim) before me.

(Exodus 20:2-3)

See now that I, even I, am he, and there is no god (Elohim) with me: I kill, and I make alive; I wound, and I heal: neither is there any that can deliver out of my hand.

(Deuteronomy 32:39)

The ancient peoples believed that the Creator of the world and people is the Stork / Ibis.
