II. 11. Pyrrha

II. 11. Pyrrha

Bogdan Georgievich Lisitsa

Pyrrha is the wife of Deucalion, the Greek Noah who survived the Flood, in Greek mythology. The name Pyrrhus / Pyrrha is derived from the ancient Greek word meaning "red, fiery". The earliest form of this name (pu-wa, Purwa) is found in Mycenaean texts. This confirms that Pyrrha and Lilith, the Red Owl, are one and the same person.

In ancient sources, Pyrrha has no independent meaning; she is a character in genealogies and a companion of Deucalion. Ancient authors call her Pandora, the first woman created by Zeus.

According to Pseudo-Apollodorus, Deucalion and Pyrrha lived in Phthiotis, and according to the Parian Chronicle, on Mount Parnassus. When Zeus decided to destroy the people of the "Copper Age", he made an exception for Pyrrha and her husband. God had ordered Deucalion to build an ark and prepare supplies for the long voyage. All humanity perished in the Flood. Deucalion and Pyrrha sailed the sea for nine days, and when the terrible rain stopped, they landed on the shore. Most sources claim that this happened on the slope of Parnassus.

Pyrrha and Deucalion did not want to be the only people on earth and asked Zeus to revive the human race. They received advice: throw over their heads the "bones of the foremother Earth." Deucalion guessed that this was about stones. He and Pyrrha began to throw stones, and they immediately turned into people. Those thrown by Deucalion - into men, those thrown by Pyrrha - into women. Thus a new people arose, ruled by Deucalion. The first author to write about the transformation of stones into people after the flood was Acusilaus, a logographer of the 6th century BC. He based his idea on the similarity of the Greek words meaning "stone" and "people." This is explained by the fact that the first people were created for hard work in diamond and gold quarries. They destroyed rock and moved many stones.
