'Jamsil Big Boy' Lee Jae-won (LG) was not selected for the Korean Series roster.
The LG Twins and KT Wiz announced their 30-man rosters for the best-of-seven Korean Series (best-of-five) at the end of the 2023 Shinhan Bank SOL Korean Series media day at Jamsil Stadium in Seoul on Saturday.
LG, the regular-season No. 1 team looking to win its first title in 29 years, has named 14 pitchers, three catchers, five infielders and eight outfielders to its 30-man roster. Pitchers include Casey Kelly, who was selected to start Game 1, as well as Im Chan-kyu, Ham Deok-joo, Choi Dong-hwan, Jung Woo-young, Ko Woo-seok, Son Ju-young, Son Jeong-yong, Lee Jung-yong, Lee Woo-chan, Kim Jin-sung, Kim Yun-sik, Choi Won-tae, Yoo Young-chan, and Baek Seung-hyun, while catchers include Park Dong-won, Heo Do-hwan, and Kim Bum-seok.
The infielders were Moon Bo-kyung, Jung Ju-hyun, Oh Ji-hwan, Kim Min-sung, and Son Ho-young, and the outfielders were Shin Min-jae, Moon Sung-joo, Ahn Ik-hoon, Park Hae-min, Kim Hyun-soo, Austin Dean, Hong Chang-ki, and Choi Seung-min.
Lee Jae-won, the highly touted "Jamsil Big Boy," will not play in the Korean Series. Manager Yoon Kyung-yeop debated between Son Ho-young and Lee Jae-won in training for the Korean Series, and ultimately chose Son Ho-young, a pinch-hitter.
Lee Jae-won was drafted by LG in the second round, 17th overall, in the 2018 KBO Draft out of Seoul High School. It took him four years to crack the egg, as the two-time Futures League home run champion finally reached double digits in home runs for the first time in his career last year in his fifth year, batting .453 with 13 home runs and two doubles in 85 games.
In 2023, new manager Yeom Kyung-yeop recognized the scent of Park Byung-ho, whom he had previously groomed into a home run king at Nexen, and requested a postponement of Lee Jae-won's scheduled enlistment in the commercial service after the 2022 season, and immediately embarked on a plan to develop the No. 4 hitter. However, Lee didn't crack the egg as expected, batting .373 with two doubles, one triple, four home runs and 18 RBIs in 56 games this season.
At the end of the season, Yoon said, "Lee Jae-won will be in the Korean Series roster. He didn't even go to the army because of me..." and said, "I will give him a chance to achieve the beauty of Yoojong despite his lack of performance," but due to team circumstances, he had to make a roster without Lee Jae-won.
