I think it isn't normal in Thailand or anywhere else. However, I do know a couple of a ladyboy (she is a transgender) and a straight man.
The transgendered girl was my employee. When she sent a resume, it showed that she was a man. I mean she has a “Mr.” title. When she showed up, she turned out to be a beautiful little lady. She is probably about 155 cm tall. She had an operation with consent of her parents when she was 16 and since then she wore a girl uniform to school. Her parents had to go to Ministry of Education to get a permission for her to wear a girl uniform as it is against the rule.

Normal or abnormal, it depends on what kind of relationship you are having with them (ladyboy).Let's me categorize type of relationship as belows :
I know of a British guy who works as an air-steward, he used to date a ladyboy and they live in a very nice condominium in the city of bangkok. I'm not entirely sure of the other details, but they've been together for quite a few years, and that ladyboy, is still a pre-op, but because thailand do not recognised post-op ladyboys as women, so there's no chance for them to get married.
Sadly, the British guy passed away recently and from what I know, he has left a portion of his inheritance for his ladyboy lover. But apparently there's a very complicated process for the estate to give the ladyboy the inheritence legally, because of British laws and Thai laws. Now I'm not sure of the outcome.

There are many stunning ladyboys in Thailand and quite a few Westerners go out with and/or live with them. Ladyboys are more accepted in Thailand than in most countries and often can't be distinguished from girls. My answer would be that it is acceptable to go out with ladyboys though most guys will take out girls. It is difficult to say it is normal but it is fairly common place. However, your own friends might not find it acceptable!
