The heiress to the raw and real giants of soul music, Ari Lennox is here to stay. The D.C.-born singer-songwriter catapulted to success in 2019 through her debut album, Shea Butter Baby. The project, now with over 1.3 billion global streams, spawned major hits: the RIAA platinum-certified title track, featuring Dreamville label head and marquee artist, J. Cole, the fan-favorite, gold-certified singles “BMO” and “Whipped Cream,” and “Up Late,” whose intimate video drew praise from ESSENCE, Noisey, Pitchfork, and Billboard. The album also reached certified gold status with the RIAA. Awards recognition capped off the debut era, with nominations at the Grammys (for her contribution on Dreamville’s album, Revenge of the Dreamers III) three 2019 Soul Train Awards, and two 2020 NAACP Awards. In 2021, she introduced her second chapter with the R&B throwback, “Pressure,” produced by legendary hitmakers Jermaine Dupri, Bryan Michael Cox and Johnta Austin. It generated the best results of Ari’s career yet, becoming her first solo Billboard Hot 100 hit and dominating radio airwaves – flying to No. 1 on the magazine’s Adult R&B Airplay chart and No. 2 overall at R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay – all while racking up over 128 million global streams. Following the torrid release of her RIAA-certified gold record “Pressure,” Ari released her slow-burning single “Hoodie,” alongside Isaiah Rashad — who made a cameo in the latest video release. “Hoodie” along with “POF” received visual treatments and reside on her critically-acclaimed sophomore album age/sex/location. Lauded by Rolling Stone as an “R&B gem” and by Pitchfork as “her sexiest and most assured music to date,” age/sex/location has entered the best album of 2022 conversation, courtesy of Ari’s brilliance and unbridled passion to bring Soul back into the forefront of music. Live appearances have only accelerated her stature, with standout performances at the 2021 American Music Awards, her 2022 Coachella festival debut and a headlining appearance at her hometown’s Broccoli City Festival earlier this month. The momentum only continued when she amassed four BET Awards and six BET Soul Train Awards nominations at this year’s ceremonies.

Autistic Max Wilkes, 31, suffers from a complex developmental disorder
Get the best and latest crime stories with our Court Insider newsletter
A convicted sex offender who has not spoken to anybody since his arrest in May has been handed a suspended sentence for downloading sexual images of children. Max Wilkes is 31-years old but since the beginning of the year has suffered an autism regression and identifies as a 12-year-old boy.
He appeared at court to be sentenced for two breaches of a Sexual Harm Prevention Order and another charge of downloading two indecent images of children to his phone. The breaches involved him setting up an Instagram account in a false name and having a phone that he used to download the images.
Exeter Crown Court was told Wilkes has criminal history of similar behaviour. But he is also vulnerable due to his autism and developmental disorder.
Wilkes was arrested in May after police tracked down his suspicious Instagram activity. At the time he was subject to a SHPO imposed in 2019 for downloading indecent images. It was designed to monitor his use of electronic devices and the internet.
Police then found a mobile phone under his bed. Analysis confirmed Wilkes had downloaded the two category C images indecent of children.
Prosecutor Mr Nigel Wraith said Wilkes' history of offending went back to 2015 when he was first given a suspended sentence for downloading images. He is subject to the sex offenders register and the SHPO is due to last until 2026.
Ms Rebecca Wood, defending, said there were unusual circumstances in the case due to the defendant's mental state. "Since May he has been verbally mute," she said.
Wilkes, of Fore Street, Chudleigh, has suffered a autism regression and interacts in the 'childlike manner' of a 12-year-old. Doctors found he was fit to plead to the offences but he is a highly vulnerable individual.
He spent time in custody following his arrest but the incarceration put massive strain on prison staff. Wilkes was barely capable of leaving his cell and required supervision and support. A whole wing had to be locked down and three or four members of staff required to support his movement. When he did move the operation took a number of hours due to his anxiety.
Judge David Evans said it was a deliberate breach and Wilkes knew what he was doing. But there were particular circumstance which allowed him to impose a suspended six-month prison sentence.
