A Tennessee woman has been slammed for gifting her brother a pair of “dissolvable” swim shorts before filming him frolicking in the waters of a public beach as they disappear.
Dara Roberts conducted the “cruel” prank last month, posting the footage to TikTok where it has been viewed a whopping 28 million times.
The clip starts with Dara’s brother, Seth, sporting the bright blue bathing shorts, which she tells him she found “new at a Goodwill.”
Seth has no idea that the pants will start to dissolve as soon as they get wet, and he is later seen wading into the waters at a busy beach blissfully unaware as to what will soon be revealed.
Footage shows Seth throwing around a football in the waist-deep water before he realizes that his swimsuit is melting away.
“My swimming trunks ripped… bad,” Seth says in a panic, as he clutches his private parts beneath the waves.
Dara continues to record him, and is heard bursting into laughter at her brother’s sudden despair.
“Quit videoing me. I’m serious,” Seth says. “I’m naked!”
He refuses to get out of the water until family members fetch him a new pair of shorts, insisting that he cannot be seen nude in public.
The clip then cuts out, so it’s unclear whether Seth was forced onto the shore while naked as a seahorse.
“We still haven’t told him the truth. Seth, if you see this. I’m sorry,” Dara captioned the clip.
However, TikTok viewers certainly weren’t laughing, and took to the comments section to slam the sister’s sinister prank.
“Funny in a backyard pool, but not in a PUBLIC place with your sibling,” one chided.
“This is more embarrassing than funny. He sounded genuinely upset,” another raged.
Others described the clip as “humiliating,” “traumatizing,” “sick” and “illegal.”
Several TikTok users said that if the gender roles were reversed, and it was a woman being pranked into wearing a dissolvable swimsuit, the authorities could be called.
“@ the overly sensitive TikTok users,” she wrote across footage of herself, which was accompanied by the song “I Hate U” by SZA.
However, the outraged comments continued.
“Your brother could have got a massive fine and been put on a registry because of that. But hahaha… so funny right?” one wrote beneath the second clip.
Dara has not responded to the ongoing backlash. Seth has not made public comment.

I never read the book so with that said, I personally loved it. As a backpacker myself, Leonardo DiCaprio's portrayal of wanting a place to escape did seem authentic. Danny Boyle's direction was excellent as usual. I don't understand why the movie gets so much hate. I can initially understand that people were probably irritated at scenes where Leonardo DiCaprio started losing his mind and the whole video game sequence came up but it wasn't like it changed the trajectory of the movie. When those backpackers were shot dead, his character snapped back into reality. It had a bit of a Lord of The Flies feel to it. But again, I never read the novel so if anyone who is in the same boat as me who hated it, I'm curious to know as to why.
If I remember correctly Leo passed on American Psycho to do the beach, giving us Christian Bales iconic performance.
Pacing of the movie is pretty shit too. Book is a page-turner while the movie loses itself once they get to the island. Most of the plot points feel disjointed thereafter.
No surprise that Richard was reduced to a hormone-driven teenage boy too. He acts like a petty asshole plenty of times in the book, but is also very intelligent in his observations and thought process. Following the story through his first-person point of view was my favorite part of that book and highlights Garland’s big talents. In the movie, he’s just the good-looking dude you sat near in class who you knew was a dick but couldn’t prove it.
The movie also loses much of the book’s portrayal of how youthful, Western culture adventure-seeking today hides a darker psychosis of current generations’ numbness from being inundated with empty stimuli. Our idea of seeking discovery and experience is actually fueled by our vicarious selfishness. We don’t want illumination, we want a release.
It’s always been a point of travel and adventure in stories to escape dissatisfaction at home, and the book also supports the popular idea of how mass tourism have decimated foreign countries to consumer pit-stops. But it had a uniquely dark, modern perspective to portray the pursuits as a result of boredom from growing up through screens and no world/societal conflict. Richard’s head is full of Vietnam war movies and desires that rush of violence. Not the actual Vietnam — fighting in a pointless war and watching your friends die — but running through the jungle and killing people while music from The Doors kicks in. His reference point for Thailand isn’t its history or culture or much his own experience of it but placing himself in Apocalypse Now or Platoon.
Maybe he’s watched too many movies and spends a little too much time in his head because of it - it was very telling in the book how short he is with people. He grew up with a comfortable life and no conflict but his mind was pumped full of celebrations of it. His vicarious conditioning has warped his understanding of life and it’s turning into something ugly. He’s traveled the world and seen the landscapes from his favorite books, movies, magazines, tv shows, music videos, commercials. Everyone else has done it too. Now he wants more.
Of course, the movie was a big-budget mainstream release so the focus is on the tropical spectacle and we got the goofy ass video game scene.
Tilda Swinton as Sal was a great choice though.
How was sit glorifying it? They let a guy die in the woods to save the community rather than get him help. The film showed how clearly out of touch and fucked up they were.
I loved this book so much and the movie was pretty but seemed to miss the point. I’d highly recommend the novel — it’s written by Alex Garland, the person behind Annihilation, 28 days later, Ex Machina, Sunshine, etc.
I wish Alex Garland would write another novel. The script for Annihilation makes for a pretty good read, it’s got some added scenes of Area X weirdness and a slightly different ending.
The whole point of the movie is that the lifestyle isn't sustainable and it comes around a cost..
The point of the book is for the whole thing to be a travellers cautionary tale. Richard ends the book almost mass-knifed to death by fanatics in the very group he'd joined, and the last line is "I carry a lot of scars" because he's covered in healing knife wounds. That whole book is very much meant to make people who think they can find paradise in a utopia in some untapped gorgeous venue are very much in for a rude awakening when other people are involved.
Sidebar: Alex Garland (who wrote the book) was SO bothered by how the book was adapted (by John Hodges) that he literally became a Hollywood screenwriter and Director (28 Days Later, Ex-Machina, Dredd, Sunshine, Annihilation) to make sure the content he creates makes it to the screen how he intends for it to.
I didn't read the book either, but thought the movie was OK. From what I remember reading, the "set" on the beach required the bulldozing of a large section of the plants and replacing them with palm trees and non-native trees. After filming, a storm swept through the "set" and it was washed away, partly damaging a coral reef. The "clean-up and repair" ended up in court, and the film makers were found liable. I think some of the hate directed at the movie may have been from the environmental damage caused during filming.
Never read the book, always thought the movie was ton of fun.
I don't hate it, i own the dvd. The cinematography, direction and soundtrack are great, and i think it captures the novel very well. However i think it fails to be a great movie mainly because Leonardo DiCaprio was terribly miscast.
I don't have a problem with Leo, he's very talented, but he wasnt right for this movie. Ewan McGregor was originally cast in the role, but it seems the studio wanted DiCaprio to put on the poster even though McGregor and Danny Boyle had previously knocked it out of the park with Shallow Grave and Trainspotting.
I just feel that DiCaprio at that stage of his career simply didn't have the chops for some of the more challenging scenes in the movie. For example, take the hallucination scenes with Robert Carlyle playing the ghost of daffy, or the scenes where the protagonist is playing commando in the jungle. Leo just doesn't hit the high notes in my opinion. He's doing his best to convincingly play a character who is going a bit mental but he never quite gets there and the movie suffers greatly because of it. Those same scenes with a young McGregor in the role could have been amazing.
There are other flaws. For example on a rewatch the movie gets quite cheesy in places, and some of the dialogue is a bit naff. For me though Leo's performance is definitely the weakest link.
Happily though, i have to admit Leo has gotten better as his career has progressed.
I love 99% of that movie, and then he has his crazed jungle run complete with faux video game visuals. It’s so cringeworthy and just not well done. I wish I could cut that one scene.
The worst is how it alters the relationships from the book and makes them entirely one-dimensional; he never fucks Francoise in the book, he definitely never fucks Sal, who is actually black and quite older, it's just silly teenage fantasy. They never really capture Richard's insanity either he's just a dude.
I was 13 when it came out, and I remember there being a big Leo backlash at the time. Comparable to how non-fans felt about Justin Bieber at the peak of his fame. I'm sure thst was a part of it.
I confess that I've never seen it, though I like Danny Boyle's other work. I guess I'll give it a shot.
Yes the Titanic, R+J Leo was annoying. Saw it for the first time a couple years ago and would recommend a watch.
I think this is the answer. I was a similar age when it released and I recall feeling a combination of Leo Fatigue + feeling like this movie was not what people were expecting him to do next (after 2 big romantic films).
I didn’t see it until years later, after I read and really enjoyed the book. I liked the movie a lot, although for different reasons than I liked the book. It seems like many people in the comments here dislike it for deviating from the book’s message.
Yeah I remember the backlash too. It was stupid looking back on it now. I remember the guys in my school calling Dicaprio untalented simply because girls liked him.
The scene where he tells the story about the shark is worth the whole running time tbh.
The scene where him and the French chic are looking through the telescope always sends me into a fantasy world.
That girl was absolutely incredible.
The only people I know that don't dislike that movie at those that haven't read the book. I don't mean as a pretentious criticism more just an observation!
The Novel is so fucking good, it's like crack. Biggest cliché ever for book is that you 'simply can't put it down' but it's true with this one.
The movie just doesn't get anywhere near the point of the book (would rather glorify everything) or the tone/atmosphere (book is so damn creepy/trippy/fucked). They don't leave the island intending to keep in touch via email at the end put it that way.
I mean, the opening chapter is titled "The Bitch" because it's Daffy in the next room ranting about "The Beach" in a Scottish accent. That hooked me from the outset.
But yes, one of the great books I've ever read.
I just read the book for the first time today, as in, I read the entire book today, i really couldn’t put it down. Watching the film for the third time now, it really doesn’t seem nearly as good as the first couple times i watched it
Alex Garland's The Beach is one of my favorite novels of all time. The story is incredible. The characters are stunningly engaging and unique and memorable. He writes in such a compelling way that draws the reader deeper and deeper into this rich, mysterious world on this island in Thailand.
The movie has really....none of that. The movie changed characters, pacing, motivations, major plot details. The casting is bad. Leo is a great actor but he's entirely miscast. Richard in the book is British and it really...makes sense for a Brit to play him. Everyone outside of maybe Tilda Swinton is awkward casting and not who I picture for the characters when I read the book. I say that as someone who read the book after the movie was released.
When I tell people The Beach is one of my favorite books of all time they raise an eyebrow, "that average, forgettable. movie with Leonardo di Caprio on the island in Thailand... THAT'S a great book??"
People now just remember Leo, Moby's Porcelain and how the filming in Maya Bay in Koh Phi Phi lead to that beach being ruined (glad I visited it a few years ago before it was shut down).
TL/DR some people hate it because we've read the book and the book is spectacular and the movie was average and Hollywood messed it up.
I don’t see how someone’s nationality would really matter. If we’re gonna be specific on those little details, than Tilda playing Sal is completely inaccurate since her character is originally American.
