As she was getting out of the bath and drying off, the doorbell rang and a female police officer was on the porch, as a neighbor had called about a suspicious motorcycle parked at a house where a single mother lived and the neighbor had seen the mother leave, but had not seen me arrive. At that moment, a naked 5 year-old girl comes running up to the front door wanting to know what was going on.
Before I was even asked for identification or any other information, the officer has her handgun out and pointed at my chest, ordering me to lie on the floor. The irony in all of this is that back then I was, in fact, the kind of person parents warned their kids about: I was a drug dealer and a probationary member of a national 1% motorcycle gang.
But not only were that mother and her daughter “family” to me, and as safe as they could be, I never harmed or hit a woman or a child, ever. I was raised to protect women and children, and “grew up” doing that very thing, caring for my dying mother and my little sister.
