I work at a hospital caring for elderly patients. I recieved my CNA over a year ago and never used it. Then a month ago I applied and got a job at the hospital. I had a couple days of following another cna around and then I was left to work. I have been asking the nurse what to do and she has been very helpful. But today before I left, leaving a 13 hour shift, the new nurse coming in for the shift said I did not put a patients bed to a lower level and I did not put the bed alarm on. Which is a huge fall risk, and a BIG deal! I felt so bad and cried the whole way home. I am wondering if I should not be a CNA and quit. I am one day wanting to become a radiation therapist. I only have worked every other weekend, 7pm-7am 4 times. Am I a bad nurse tech?
Well, a few mistakes here and there initially are okay but they shouldn't happen. You need to form a habit when putting people in bed. Basically before you leave a room, get in a practice of scanning the room and looking at the bed.
Please, if that's your worst mistake you are in pretty good shape. People make mistakes. Some mistakes are worse than others. This was not a bad mistake because it was found early enough that nobody was hurt. It would have been a bigger deal if the pt had fallen, but even then, you wouldn't likely have gotten fired over it or anything. I bet you learned a very important lesson and you'll never leave a bed raised or forget to turn the alarm on ever again, will you? :)
Being a CNA is good job experience in patient care. I would encourage you to not quit. Are you going to quit every job you ever have as soon as you make a mistake that someone gives you feedback about? You really need to try to grow a bit of a spine and take the feedback and use it to change. People aren't looking down on you for your mistake and think you're incapable of being a CNA. You're judging yourself too harshly. Man, if I quit a job every time I made a mistake or lost confidence, I wouldn't be able to work ever again.
No, your not a bad CNA. Working as a CNA in facilities like that taking care of the elderly is extremely stressful. I did it for about 2 years part time while getting my nursing degree and I could barely hang. A lot of nurses do get upset when those type of precautions are not taken even if it was unintentional because when these elderly people fall and get hurt it is not a pretty picture. A lot of the blame could go toward the nurse who really should have ensured that you knew this info since she is the charge/floor nurse. Nonetheless, long term care facilities & rehab centers are extremely busy & stressful places for both the CNA & the nurse. Often times so much is going on as well with every patient that sometimes both the CNA & the nurse forget certain things. Also, a lot of facilities like that don't staff enough mostly because of greed. The bottom line to facilities like this is that they made money by the end of the day, even if it took not staffing with enough employees.
Everyone makes mistakes. Learn from them and don't repeat them.
To be honest I don't know what a Nurse Tech does since we don't have them in my country but it seems like you made a simple mistake.
Don't make to much of a deal out of it, just be careful and double-check everything you do, especially after a shift that long (so very glad that long shifts are illegal here) and as I said, learn from it.
