I. 32. The Torments of Tantalus

I. 32. The Torments of Tantalus

Bogdan Georgievich Lisitsa

Tantalus is the king of Sipylus in Phrygia, doomed to eternal torment, in ancient Greek mythology.

The name Tantalus is associated with the word "quarry", close to the word "dump" and the name of Anatolia. Tantalus is the personification of the first generation of humanity. These people worked hard in giant quarries for reptiles. Their situation was hopeless, the future seemed bleak, there was despair in their eyes. It seemed that the first people were doomed to torment that would last forever.

According to Homer, in the underworld, Tantalus experiences unbearable torment from thirst and hunger. He stands neck-deep in water, he cannot reach the water. As soon as he opens his mouth to scoop up water, it flows away. He sees ripe fruits near him, he cannot reach them. He raises his hands to pluck the fruit, but the branch with the fruit bends away. This is where the expression "Tantalus' torment" comes from. This legend demonstrates the attitude of ancient reptiles to their slaves, the first people. The underground kingdom is the lower levels of a giant quarry on the site of the current Black Sea. 2210 m is the greatest depth of the Black Sea, at such depths the first people worked. The cruel attitude of ancient reptiles to the first people was supplemented by poor nutrition. According to this myth, people also suffered from the lack or shortage of water and food.

Tantalus is also the hypostasis of the first liberator of people, known under the names Adam, Noah and Ham. Tantalus was a favorite of the gods of Olympus and had access to their councils and feasts. According to myths, he became proud of his high position and for insulting the gods, was cast down to the domain of Hades.

The first war between reptiles and people is depicted in the myth of the expulsion of Tantalus. According to this legend, Tantalus lived in Paphlagonia and revealed the secrets of the gods to people. Having become hated by the gods, he was expelled from Paphlagonia. According to the historian Democles, during the reign of Tantalus, earthquakes occurred that destroyed Mount Sipylus and Troy was flooded by waves. This means that a gigantic cataclysm on earth with strong earthquakes and floods occurred simultaneously with the war of people against the reptiles.

According to the Greek writer and historian of the 2nd century BC Demetrius of Scepsis, the source of Tantalus' wealth were the mines in Phrygia and Sipylus. This means that after the Flood and the liberation of people from the slavery of the reptiles, they mined gold for their kings.

Tantalus did for people:

1. Stole nectar and ambrosia from the gods' table to give to his friends

2. Divulged the secret decisions of Zeus and revealed the secrets of the gods to people

3. Broke his oath to take possession of the golden dog stolen for him from the temple of Zeus

This means:

1. Tantalus wanted to give people immortality, which reptiles probably had.

2. Tantalus had knowledge and enlightened people.

3. The myth of the golden dog is the story of the domestication of wolves and the appearance of dogs, which helped the development of humanity at the initial stage.

There is a myth according to which Tantalus tested the omniscience of the gods. This means that Tantalus doubted the omnipotence of the smart reptiles and wanted to free humanity. According to this myth, he killed his son Pelops, prepared a dish from his meat and served it to the feasting gods. However, the gods understood Tantalus' plan and resurrected the dead man. The shoulder blade was eaten by Demeter, who was distracted and saddened by her lost daughter Persephone. Hephaestus made him a new shoulder blade out of ivory. This means that in very ancient times, long before Jesus Christ, there was a Hero who experienced the first resurrection from the dead.

The entire race of Tantalus was cursed. The reptiles, who were gods, creators and masters of people, lost them and therefore cursed them.
