Bogdan Georgievich LisitsaPontus is the ancient name of the northeastern region of Asia Minor, adjoining the Pontus Euxinus (Black Sea) in the north. The name "Pontus" means "garbage dump". Also Pontus is the Black Sea in Greek. But the word "sea" in Greek is Thálassa. This means that Pontus was originally associated not with the sea, but with a giant quarry that was here before the Black Sea appeared.
