When I first heard about erotic hypnosis I was totally up for giving it a go. After all, I do yoga, I do mindfulness, why shouldn’t this work for me? I even did hypnobirthing when I had my first child two years ago. If it can work for childbirth, hypnotising myself to orgasm ought to be a piece of cake.
Not to be confused with audio porn or ASMR, erotic hypnosis aims to put users into a trance for the purposes of sexual pleasure. For some it’s a way of relaxing so they can come. For others there’s a kinky element. Letting a hypnotist tell you what to do is pretty submissive and many people incorporate ideas of control into their erotic hypnosis. (It’s important to note that a hypnotic trance does not make you incapable of saying no, it just makes you more open to suggestion.) But the ultimate goal is the hands-free orgasm - being able to come on command without touching yourself or being touched. Sounds cool, right?
"It was like nothing I'd ever experienced before"
Ramona*, who regularly practises erotic hypnosis says it took a while but it was worth the effort. “Hands-free orgasm is like nothing I'd ever experienced before. My first hypno orgasm was insane, I was genuinely in shock for hours at the intensity of it. I have since learned to orgasm pretty much on command,” she tells me.
She got into erotic hypnosis after being introduced by an ex-boyfriend. "He was into it and I thought it was rubbish so I saw it as a challenge to prove him wrong. It didn't work for me at all, the first few sessions. I kept going with it because I enjoyed listening to him and it was very relaxing. The main obstacle for me was concentration. I have ADHD, so I kept getting distracted. It took a lot of practice to work through that, but going into a trance is a skill that I believe anyone who really wants it can learn!"
But she and her friend Scott*, who she met through erotic hypnosis events, warn me that it won’t work for everyone. “I think some people can achieve it fairly easily, but triggering orgasms from someone ‘cold’ isn't usually effective,” Scott says. "I was always fascinated with hypnosis. I started doing hypnosis pre-internet, and back then I was either finding hypnosis tapes which weren't intended to be sexy, or recording my own. A lot of [the pleasure] I think, is in having a functioning relationship with the hypnotist. Which is not to say recordings can't work, but you can't do something that will work for everyone."

Sex and relationships therapist Colin Richards agrees, “Orgasm is generated in the brain, so if you could get your brain to that place then there’s no reason why it couldn’t happen. But some people are more open to that than others. You’re a journalist so I suspect you’re not always happy to give over control.”
While I love the idea of erotic hypnosis, I do feel sceptical. Let’s face it, most of my real life partners have struggled to figure out how to make me come, so what chance does some rando on YouTube have? Nevertheless, I’m up for giving it a try.

The first YouTube track I try starts well, with a femme voice guiding me through a visualisation.

I settle on a track entitled, boringly, Erotic Hypnosis – Hands Free Orgasm For Women. After a brief relaxation exercise, the hypnotist introduces some “trigger” words. “Every time I say the word ‘pussy’ you will feel someone stroking your pussy and every time I say the word ‘clit’ you will feel someone rubbing your clit,” he tells me. So far, so straightforward.
But after a week of listening every day, I’m no closer to feeling anything beyond exasperation and low-key horn.
Getting a licensed hypnotherapist to talk to me about my experience was difficult. Erotic hypnosis isn’t a recognised form of hypnotherapy and practising it can see you lose your accredited status.
“Erotic hypnosis contravenes the ethical principles of all mainstream accrediting bodies,” says psychotherapist and hypnotherapist Zayna Ratty. While I’m not exactly putting myself in harm's way by watching a YouTube video, she explains there’s no way of knowing whether what I’m listening to is legit or total nonsense.

“People who practice erotic hypnosis may not be trained, accredited or insured,” she says. “So you have no guarantee of the quality of hypnosis you’re getting, or even if it will be effective at all.”
Another hypnotherapist, who agreed to talk to me anonymously, was even more scathing. “The person making this video is not a therapist, he doesn’t even adhere to the human sexual response cycle," they say. "It just sounded like some bloke’s personal fantasy.”
Still, as I head into my second week of erotic hypnosis I start to really look forward to my sessions… until I realise it’s because I’m more excited about having a lie down than I am about my hands-free orgasm.
Once, I even fall asleep while listening to the track. I wake up half an hour later, confused and annoyed and – yep – kind of horny. Feeling like I’ve earned the right to masturbate, I unzip my jeans and have a consolatory wank.
Honestly, it’s such a relief to be hands-on again.
