The vulva is a portal for a variety of functions (reproductive and excretory) and has a unique role in sexual feelings and function.
Because it is covered with both dry, squamous skin and moist mucous membrane, it is subject to diseases affecting both. Because of the close proximity of the rectum, intestinal bacteria (anaerobes and coliforms) are more or less constantly present to some degree. These may influence the type and course of infections in this area.
The vulva may develop conditions both benign and malignant, symptomless, annoying, or even disabling.
The larger lips, labia majora, extend from the mons pubis to the rectum. These are large, fleshy pads that cover the bony pubic rami. They each contain a Bartholin gland, which is usually not noticed but occasionally causes some problems.
Just inside the labia majora are the smaller lips, the labia minora. In women who have not had a baby, they are very thin and are usually hidden, to some extent, by the labia majora. After a pregnancy, they are thicker and more prominent. They are rich in nerve endings and are usually very sensitive to touch. During sexual arousal, they swell and moisten with extracellular fluid. During urination, the labia minora function to direct the urine stream in a more or less single direction by forming a curtain on either side of the urethra.
The labia minora come together at the top of the vulva to form the clitoral hood. This tissue covers the clitoris, which lies just beneath the hood. The clitoris is characteristically firmer than the surrounding tissues, with a rubbery consistency. It has a high concentration of nerve endings and is extremely sensitive to touch and vibration. It is usually, but not always, the area of greatest sexual sensitivity. During the early stages of sexual arousal, it swells and protrudes just beyond the clitoral hood. In the latter phases of arousal, it generally flattens and retracts back beneath the clitoral hood.
The urethra lies between the clitoris and the vagina. It conducts urine from the bladder to the outside. It is normally non-tender to light or moderate touch. On each side of the urethra are the pin-point Skene’s ducts.
When the labia are spread open, the hymen or remnants of the hymen are visualized. This ring-like structure is usually torn at first intercourse, leading to a small amount of bleeding. For some women, insertion of tampons or other objects will lead to hymeneal rupture. After healing, only small bumps or flaps of skin remain.
Anatomic variation with hymens is considerable. Some are thin, stretchy, and so small as to be largely unnoticed. Others are thick and nearly impenetrable. Rarely, the hymen completely covers the vaginal opening, disallowing the passage of menstrual products.
Just inside the hymen is the beginning of the vagina. In contrast to the smooth vulvar skin, the vaginal skin has circumferential ridges (rugae). The vagina is not cylindrical in shape, but more like a flattened cone, narrow at the vaginal opening, and widening as the vagina approaches the cervix. Normally, the anterior and posterior vaginal walls are in contact with each other, but during intercourse or an examination, they separate. During sexual arousal, the vaginal skin “sweats” small droplets of extracellular fluid, which is the primary source of lubrication during intercourse.
The posterior fourchette is the area of mucous membrane between the rectum and the hymeneal ring.
Some women do not seem to have any noticeable discharge, while others normally have a more or less constant slight discharge that is odorless, clear to white and mucoid in nature.

On Wednesday, rapper T.I. bragged about taking his daughter on “yearly trips to the gynecologist to check her hymen,” implying that if she weren’t a virgin, the thin membrane wouldn’t be intact. Condemnation came quickly and swiftly for the “coercive” and “shaming” behavior, as some called it . In the medical community and among human rights proponents, the practice is considered unnecessary, painful and often traumatic, according to the United Nations, which called for a ban on the practice last year . One 24-year-old woman shared with The Post her own traumatic experience of having her hymen checked by her mother while growing up in Williamsburg. She declined to share her name due to the sensitive family dynamics.
The first time my mom ever checked my hymen was when I was 13 years old. I had stayed out really late, and my parents had no idea where I was. I came back home at about two in the morning after zero contact all night. My mom was a rape survivor, so it was very important to her that my first sex experience was a positive one.
But this accomplished nothing but creating fear and doubt in me.
The first thing that she did was drag me up to my bedroom, toss me onto my bed and tell me to take off my underwear. She held my legs open and looked. There was no touching involved.
The second experience, I was 14 and it was another time when I went M.I.A and wasn’t responsive to her calling me. It was probably about 6 p.m. when I got home. She had me lay down and spread my legs and looked.
That day was actually, ironically, my first kiss. But at the time, I didn’t want to lose my virginity. I wanted to have a level head on my shoulders about it.
The last time my mom ever checked I was 15, and it ended with an altercation.
We were on a cruise. And she found me late at night in the library with another girl and two guys. I was sitting on a couch with a guy at the opposite end. Nothing was happening, but she took me back to our room. When she went to check, I refused. I told her to back off.
“You can’t do this anymore,” I yelled at her. “I’m not a little kid, you can’t just pin me down to a bed and spread my legs.”
She went to strike me. [My stepdad] and my brother just looked at the water while my mother and I tussled on the bed.
That kind of attack just made me want to hide within myself more. And not share myself. It was very confusing for me too, because my mom is a very educated person, and she understands that hymens can break through horseback riding and gymnastics. And horseback riding was something I did on more than one occasion.
I had to wonder, “What is my mom’s image of me?” I felt dirty, unclean.
A lot of my experiences being with boys after that started with me hiding. When I first started [hooking up], it was usually in the school’s stairwell or public parks where you can just make out somewhere and not be scared. I couldn’t go home. I became an extremely secretive teenager. I didn’t like lying, but at the same time, I had parents who were so intense about everything that I did.
It wasn’t something I wanted to talk about with anyone, besides my best friend at the time. I felt really alone in my experience. And it kept me away [from doctors] as an adult. I didn’t go to a gynecologist till I was 21, and the only reason I went was because I needed to have an abortion. That was the first check I ever had.
My gynecologist was very sweet. She made sure I was okay the whole time, which was a breath of fresh air considering the only other experience I’d had was with my mother.
Now that I’m older, I can talk about it. I’ve heard that with rape victims and people who have survived rape, there’s this feeling of separating yourself from body. It doesn’t really feel like it’s happening to you, and it gets so pushed back and internalized. My experience was similarly traumatic.
I’ve been able to find peace with my mom. She has grown a lot. But I don’t think she thinks about the trauma she’s caused me. I don’t even know if she remembers.
When I heard about T.I., I was appalled. I was confused. It’s very controlling. You would expect a doctor to speak to the father, whether it’s T.I. or not, and explain to them why it’s not possible to see if [a woman’s still a virgin] .
When I have my own kids, I do want to be somebody who they can speak to, and I don’t want to know every detail of their sexual experience, but they should have a place where they feel comfortable. Where they don’t have to hide.

A CHRISTIAN virgin who is auctioning off her virginity has made a video claiming she’s “the purest virgin of them all”.
Bailey Gibson, 23, recorded herself brandishing written verification from a doctor certifying that her virginity is legitimate.
Bailey, from Wisconsin, has announced that she is auctioning her virginity at the world famous Moonlite Bunny Ranch legal brothel near Reno, Nevada.
She claims the current bid on her virginity is over £142,740 ($200,000) but that the standing amount falls far below her expectations.
In the video she challenges other “so called virgins” selling their chastity to provide the same level of proof.
Bailey said on the video: “This document signed by my doctor is proof of my authenticity. I challenge every other so called virgin to publically show evidence of their purity as well.
“So far I’m the only one with proof so if you don’t want to waste your money email me.”
An adopted daughter of devoutly religious parents and a graduate of an all-girls Christian boarding school, Gibson grew up as the quintessential “good girl.”
She said in a blog post: “I grew up nestled in a gated community in the suburbs of Sacramento, California. I was adopted when I was one year old, and grew up with very strong Christian values as my adoptive father was an elder at our home church.
“I was not allowed to watch TV, listen to any music other than Christian music, have friends over, or have sleepovers ever.”
After graduating from the rigorous institution, Gibson met up with her birth family and spent some time living with her biological grandmother in Wisconsin, where she met and moved in with her first serious boyfriend.
She said: “My ex-boyfriend was a Christian at the time and I did not wish to have a sexual relationship with him until we were married. Knowing I was a virgin, he respected my values for a while.
“I learned that love can be deceiving when I discovered that he slept with his ex on Valentine’s Day.”
It was after this painful breakup that Gibson first got the idea to capitalize on her virginity and contacted Bunny Ranch brothel owner Dennis Hof.
Bailey said she has received numerous messages from people claiming that her auction is a fraud and that she is not truly untouched by man.
She added: “People look at my alluring pictures and assume that I’m lying about my sexual innocence.
“But I’m a virgin, one hundred percent, for real, and my doctor will back me up.”
Dennis Hof, owner of the Moonlite Bunny Ranch and six other legal brothels throughout the state of Nevada, shares Bailey’s outrage regarding these doubters.
Dennis said: “I’ve been in the brothel game for decades and I’m easily the most respected bordello owner on the planet.
“It’s a little insulting to hear that individuals are questioning the veracity of my virgins. Bailey’s auction is the real thing.
“If I had any doubts, I wouldn’t put the Bunny Ranch name on it.”
The Bunny Ranch will receive 50 per cent of the final bid price for Bailey’s virginity and the bidding window is tentatively scheduled to close on September 15.
She said of her expectations of the winning bid: “I want ten million. I’m selling something that I can only sell once, and it is the most intimate of all the things you could put a price on.
“For me, to give up my innocence for less would be criminal. I’m worth it, and the man I lose my purity to will be someone who understands the true value of my untouched womanliness.”
