A few weeks ago, Lydia Rodriguez thought her body was strong enough to fight the coronavirus without the vaccine.
But after a week-long church camp, she and other members of her family tested positive for the coronavirus. By the time Rodriguez, 42, changed her mind and asked for the shot, it was too late, her doctor said. A ventilator awaited her, her cousin Dottie Jones told The Washington Post.
Out of options, the Galveston, Texas, mother of four, asked her family to make a promise: "Please make sure my kids get vaccinated," Rodriguez, a piano teacher, told her sister during their last phone call.
Rodriguez died Monday - two weeks after her husband, Lawrence Rodriguez, 49, also died after coronavirus complications. The couple fought the virus from hospital beds just a few feet from one another in a Texas intensive care unit, Jones said.
Lydia and Lawrence Rodriguez, who were married for 21 years, were among the tens of millions of Americans who have not yet received at least one dose of the coronavirus vaccine, which is available free to anyone over the age of 12. Health officials have stressed that the vaccine significantly lowers one's chance of becoming severely ill or dying of the virus. The now-orphaned children of the Rodriguez family join the millions tragically affected by the sometimes deadly illness.
The case of the Rodriguez family echoes that of other unvaccinated patients who have begged their doctors for vaccine doses before being intubated.
"Lydia has never really believed in vaccines," Jones, 55, told The Post. "She believed that she could handle everything on her own, that you didn't really need medicine."
A neonatal nurse, Jones was familiar with the serious effects covid-19 had on mothers and babies she treated at the Sugarland, Texas, hospital where she worked. She shared with Rodriguez how she had watched patient after patient be connected to a ventilator for weeks without much improvement.

A woman's husband is furious with her after she caused him to miss a family reunion. She asked Reddit's "Am I the A******" forum for help. "Last night was my MIL’s birthday. She’s 65 and healthy, but my husband hasn’t seen her since the beginning of the pandemic". "I’m 34 weeks pregnant and also healthy. But by the time I got home, I was exhausted and in need of a massage. My husband was on his way out to his mom’s dinner, and he was expecting me to meet him there. He was disappointed when I told him I wasn’t going to go, but he understood. However, when I asked him to stay back for a half-hour to give me a massage, he got upset that I’d make him late. when she continued to argue with him, things quickly got heated. "I suggested I get a massage from our mutual friend (my best friend’s boyfriend) who is a massage therapist in training," she said. "But there’s a tiny bit of history between us, so my husband didn’t like that either. We argued, he ended up being late. A British mom will spend at least 12 years in prison for burning her elderly husband with a mix of boiling water and sugar — a gruesome murder that came after she heard rumors he had sexually abused her two children.
Corinna Smith, who was sentenced over the weekend, became “angry and very upset” after hearing the unproven allegations about her 81-year-old husband on July 13, 2020, authorities said. She then planned a disturbing attack that would leave the man in the hospital for weeks leading up to his death.
Smith, 59, came home the day after hearing the rumors, filled a bucket with boiling water, mixed it with more than 6 pounds of sugar and doused the deadly mixture over Michael Baines’ arms and torso while he slept, according to prosecutors in the northwest England county of Cheshire.
“The sugar placed into the water makes it vicious. It becomes thicker and stickier and sinks into the skin better,” said Paul Hughes, detective chief inspector with Cheshire Constabulary’s Major Crime Directorate.
The woman left the house immediately after the incident and ran to a neighboring home in the town of Neston, leaving her husband “in agony,” authorities said. The neighbor, who she wasn’t close to, later told police that she banged on his door and said, “I’ve hurt him really bad, I think I’ve killed him,” according to prosecutors.
Police were called to the scene and found Baines “in excruciating pain and whimpering in bed with the skin on his right arm and hand peeling off,” authorities said. He was taken to a hospital and remained in a burn unit for weeks, but his condition deteriorated and he died a month after the attack.
Prosecutors told a court last week that Smith was acting on a belief that Baines had sexually abused her daughter and son “for many years while they were children,” a claim made by her daughter, local news outlet Liverpool Echo reported.
Smith was jailed on a murder charge after her husband’s death and was found guilty on June 15 following a five-day jury trial at Chester Crown Court. She was sentenced Friday to life in prison but could be eligible for parole after serving a minimum of 12 years.
“Smith killed her husband Michael in such a painful and cruel way,” Hughes said in a statement . “To throw boiling water over someone when they are asleep is absolutely horrific. To also mix three bags of sugar with the water showed the determination she had to cause serious harm.
“Michael was an elderly man who fought for his life after the attack but sadly in the end he passed away. My thoughts continue to be with his family at this incredibly difficult time.”
