Huorns were creatures much like Ents , although they do not appear to have been truly sentient.

The origin of the Huorns is unknown. It is not clear if Huorns were Ents that had become tree-like, or trees that had become Entish. Perhaps both varieties existed, though the Hobbit Meriadoc Brandybuck believed the former was true. [1] Either way it is obvious they were part way between trees and Ents. [2]

In the Third Age , the Huorns lived in Fangorn Forest , [1] though it is possible that the trees of the Old Forest , especially Old Man Willow , were Huorns as well.

During the War of the Ring , Huorns were aroused by Treebeard to destroy Nan Curunír . [1] Gandalf saw the shadow of these Huorns, as he rode with the host from Edoras to Hornburg . [3] [4] Directed by the Ents, the Huorns also helped the Rohirrim to fight the Orcs at the Battle of the Hornburg . [1]

Huorns had great power and could wrap themselves in shadow. When angry, they were able to move with great speed. The Huorns further had voices, as they could speak with the Ents. When no Ents looked after them, the Huorns were " queer and wild ", a threat to the Free peoples . [1]

Carl F. Hostetter has suggested that Huorn is a Quenya word meaning "talking tree". [5]

The first element of huorn might be derived from the root KHUG- , and the second element is Sindarin orn . [6]

Apparently, there was also a much longer Entish word for huorn . [1]

Huron , also called Wyandot, Wyandotte , or Wendat , Iroquoian-speaking North American Indians who were living along the St. Lawrence River when contacted by French explorer Jacques Cartier in 1534.
Many aspects of Huron culture were similar to those of other Northeast Indians . Traditionally, the Huron lived in villages of large bark-covered longhouses , each of which housed a matrilineal extended family; some villages were protected by an encircling palisade. Agriculture was the mainstay of the Huron economy; men cleared fields and women planted, tended, and harvested crops including corn (maize), beans , squash , and sunflowers . Hunting and fishing supplemented the diet.
The Huron were divided into matrilineal exogamous clans, each headed by a clan chief; all the clan chiefs of a village formed a council, which, with the village chief, decided civil affairs. Villages were grouped into bands (each of which had a band chief and a band council, consisting of village chiefs, to deal with civil matters affecting the entire band), and all the bands together constituted the Huron nation. A large council of band chiefs and their local councils dealt with matters concerning the whole tribe. Women were highly influential in Huron affairs, as each clan’s senior women were responsible for selecting its civil leader.
The Huron were bitter enemies of tribes of the Iroquois Confederacy , with whom they competed in the fur trade. Before the 17th century the Iroquois drove some Huron from the St. Lawrence River westward into what is now Ontario , where related groups seem to have already been resident; four of those bands (the Rock, Cord, Bear, and Deer peoples) formed the Wendat Confederacy , which was defeated and dispersed by Iroquois invasions in 1648–50. The survivors were either captured and forced to settle among their conquerors or driven west and north. The latter remnants drifted back and forth between Michigan , Wisconsin , Ontario, Ohio , and Quebec . During the French and Indian War in the mid-18th century, the Huron allied with the French against the British and the Iroquois Confederacy.
The Huron gradually reestablished some influence in Ohio and Michigan, but the U.S. government eventually forced tribal members to sell their lands. They subsequently migrated to Kansas and then to Indian Territory (present-day Oklahoma ).
Early 21st-century population estimates indicated some 4,000 individuals of Huron descent.

Huorns are passive (until angered) mobs that spawn in Fangorn forest . They appear as regular oak, birch, or beech trees until attacked or disturbed, then angry faces appear on them and they come to life. Like Ents , these are the type of trees that don't 'just bark'.

There are two variants, the regular Huorn and the Dark Huorn (see section below). Both have 60 (30 x ) health. Upon death, both variants will drop logs of their tree type and/or sticks.

As of Update 35 , Huorns have several different "face" textures as opposed to a single one. This adds more variety among individuals.

Huorns are as fast as a sprinting player, and are not hurt very much by swords or any other weapons. Fire and axes (including battleaxes ) are the best way to defend yourself, as any other weapon will only deal a third of its normal damage, and they are immune to poison.

Killing a regular Huorn will lower your Fangorn alignment ; however, it earns you the achievement "Lumberjack" .

Both types of Huorns reach more than 2 blocks far, when attacking you. So it's no use to hide below a regular oak/birch tree, as their leaves reach out only 2 blocks (which was possible in older mod versions). You've got to extend the leaves one block further out, or design some kind of platform under which to seek shelter when hunting Huorns systematically. They hit quite hard, so get yourself a decent armour before attempting to fight them. Even so, a swarm of huorns can rapidly overrun even the most well-geared of players.

Dark Huorns spawn in the Old Forest and are hostile to all players. They will attack you if you try to cut down a tree in the Old Forest, regardless of one's alignment . They may also attack if you get too close to them.

Like the regular Huorn, it is best to combat this foe with fire or axes. Unlike regular Huorns, birch and beech variants do not exist.

Killing a Dark Huorn will give you the achievement "Forester's Nightmare" as well as alignment with Hobbits , Bree-land and the Dúnedain of the North . It's the only way to gain positive Hobbit alignment besides of mini-quests and performing hobbit marriages. Killing Dark Huorns does not lower your Fangorn alignment.

As of Public Beta 19 , hired Huorns can be created. For that you need golden Ent draught and at least +500 Fangorn alignment . Just take the golden Ent draught in one hand and right-click a sapling (oak, birch or beech). Make sure there is enough space above the sapling to actually spawn the Huorn. Also, the sapling does not get used up in the process.

When a Huorn is hired, it has much of the same mechanics as other hire-able units. They can be set to guard mode or dismissed, and a green bar above their head shows their health. They do, however, have a special method of being summoned. All the player needs to do is to apply the golden Ent draught.

Upon hiring a Huorn, the player earns the achievement " From Little Acorns "

Note that players with Fangorn alignment under +500 can't hire Huorns.

Most of the trees are just trees, of course; but many are half awake... When that happens to a tree, you will find that some have bad hearts. Nothing to do with their wood: I do not mean that.

‘So Saruman would not leave?’ he said. ‘I did not think he would. His heart is as rotten as a black Huorn’s. Still, if I were overcome and all my trees destroyed, I would not come while I had one dark hole left to hide in.’
