Minor Spoilers. Although, there really isn't much to spoil in this one. The story is bare bones and solely exists to set up the mindless action. Think Pacific Rim in terms of approach to entertaining a viewer. You can know every aspect of what happens in this movie before hand, and the experience will be no better or worse when you see it yourself. The premise starts off interesting with a squad of soldiers in the desert. Don't get attached. Most movies pick off ancillary characters one by one, allowing you to get to know at least some of the survivors. This one just wants to get them out of the way immediately for some reason. Not a fan of that. It feels rushed. There's also an inexplicably goofy precedent for large wooden sloops (pirate ships) that can travel faster on sand than in water using absolutely nothing but wind and sails. Scratch that; there is no visible wind either. Prepare your suspension of disbelief. I tried to imagine they were inspired by Pirates of the Caribbean where Jack Sparrow was stuck in the underworld on a ship being moved across the desert by crabs that like to pretend to be rocks sometimes. And I just imagined that a bunch of crabs were carrying this Monster Hunter pirate ship at about 80 mph across the desert. It's more believable that way. After all Mila's friends are dead, a Chinese guy with no name inexplicably tries to kill Mila (aka Artemis). This is right after trying to save her and her team. It makes absolutely zero sense. He risks his life, and wastes tons of vital ammunition to try to save them. And then immediately tries to kill her when he gets close to them. Huge failure in story telling logic there. I very literally face palmed so hard it made my face sting. Movies don't make me do that often... but Monster Hunters sure did. Then we get a long drawn out sequence of them trying to kill each other some more, that goes on for far too long. The Chinese guy gets stabbed right in the aorta of his heart. A 100% fatal wound. But he smears some chewed up algae on it so it's all good now. Then, we get a bunch more of them trying to kill each other. Each sustaining enough injuries to make someone bedridden for a month. Suddenly, they decide to stop fighting and be friends because a spider monster might kill one of them. They have no problem trying to stab each other in their hearts, or slit their throats. But a giant spider getting one of them? Unacceptable. "Let's be friends now, I decided. As a token of our friendship, here is some Hershey Milk Chocolate product placement as a peace offering. You might be wondering why it is not melted and in perfect condition despite me being in a scalding hot desert for days, and having fallen off several cliffs and I've been thrown several dozen feet on multiple occasions. Don't worry about it. Just go buy some Hershey's." Next we get a nice little montage of Mila learning how to be a monster hunter. If you've ever watched the episode of South Park where they have a parody song making fun of montages, there's a good chance you will be playing that song in your head while this looooong montage plays out. Then they engage diablo who is a cross between a giant ram, a gorilla, and a dinosaur. He is the single least biologically well-designed creature for burrowing in dirt or sand. There is nothing about him that makes him capable of digging into sand, much less traveling through and under it. But he will magically turn sand into the consistency of water, and just face-plant into it, sinking through it with zero effort. Then he will travel as fast as a sports car through it. They wanted the creature to be bad a***, but I was laughing the first few times I saw him, and then rolling my eyes later on. And then there's the US military later on. If any army is this incompetent and patently stupid in the real world, then they probably deserve to be destroyed. For starters, they have a single Abrams tank in their armored column. That's not how real armored columns work. They fly their ospreys so close together while engaging their enemies that they are more likely to have a propeller collision than be destroyed by an enemy. The armored column is primarily stocked with dune buggies; well known for being the primary vehicles in an armored division, used to engage targets directly and in formation. They all drive their vehicles together as if they are still in a convoy, making sure no one is more than 20 feet away from their friends, guaranteeing that a single shell/fire breath could take out multiple vehicles at once, and if anyone needs to maneuver to avoid incoming dangers, they are guaranteed to crash into each other. Did you know that depleted uranium armor is easy to chew through? It will probably deflect an armor piercing sabot or HEAT round, but dragon teeth "nom nom" it like it's made of balsa wood. Also, the dragon can inexplicably teleport. Don't worry about it. But the diablo creature could also conveniently teleport if not in camera view, so at least there's a precedent. A sword always seems to be more effective than a tank in this kind of movie. That's why, if I was a tank commander, I'd instruct my driver to "Get closer. I want to hit them with my sword." Also, Paul Anderson apparently thinks spy planes with radar domes fly about a 100 feet in the air, instead of well into the stratosphere. Nobody tell him how technology works. All in all, the final sequence hurt me in the deepest, darkest, coldest part of my heart. Hollywood doesn't try anymore.

I bought this disk a while ago despite all the horrible reviews for everything from the release date to the disc not playing on a UK DVD player. That's not the point of this review - I don't care about any of those issues. I was NOT expecting The Godfather or Citizen Kane. I'm not a gamer, I don't know anything about that side of this movie - this is purely an audio review although the 4K on a high end Sony 4K TV is excellent. I will not do a plot summary or review, all that data is already online. What's not emphasized in 99% of the reviews is the loud and abusive yet superbly produced sound track that backs this otherwise very mediocre "kill the monsters and admire Milla's jaw line" flick. If you have the right audio/visual gear, the sound track backing this movie is the REAL monster. The pandemic has allowed me to revisit the best ATMOS and Dolby audio flicks on the market - Black Hawk Down, Ready Player One, Baby Driver, Mad Max: Road Fury, Gravity and the Lord of the Rings trilogy to name a few. I judged the audio bang on the same system and Gravity is the only of those DVD's that is remotely close to the finely tuned audio blast power of this DVD. The separation, clarity, wizard-like ATMOS effects, subwoofer punch and overall audio depth had me scrambling to get my system adjusted - I felt like a rookie sound board operator at a Chili Peppers concert. Once I got the audio dialed in, this flick was very enjoyable despite the plodding GPS like plot, horrible acting, predictable ending and way too many Milla versus the little dude fights early on in the flick. I did enjoy Milla - it's really hard to not like those features. 5 stars for the audio, 5 stars for the video, 0 stars for the plot/acting. 5 stars for Milla's features and 0 stars for Ron Perlman's hairdo which equals my overall 4 star rating. I was not a math major. Bottom line is that if you are a home theater audio freak with good gear (a $300 sound bar does not count) and want to blow out your windows with great clarity, buy the 4K version of this flick. I'm not responsible for your neighbor noise complaints, the cops showing up at your door or any equipment damage. Proceed at your own risk. Hope that helps!

If you like the other action movies by Jovovich you will like Monster Hunter. It is the same director as the Resident Evil franchise, which was horror mixed with action. This is action with some elements of horror. A very enjoyable mix, and great performances by the whole cast. This is meant to be fun, obviously, and it succeeds in what it sets out to do.

This movie is based on the Monster Hunter series of games. The monsters are represented incredibly well. The "oh god, my puny earth weapons do nothing to these things" moments are also fantastic. The Hunters? Eh.... they didn't quite get them right. In the movie, the Hunters are more like Ninjas with large weapons than what they actually are. In the games, the Hunters (i.e. NOT Mila's character) are descendants of people who had their genetics weaponized. The ancestors in question were designed to be incredibly strong, fast, and resilient.Think of the Custodes from Warhammer 40k. That's a good comparison. The reason why they were designed this way was because the Ancients (the builders of the tower in the movie) were at war with Elder Dragons. No, not Rathalos or Diablos. I'm talking about the big boys like Teostra, Lunastra, Gore Magala, Nergigante, Zorah Magdaros (who is literally a sentient volcano), etc. These big boys/big girls are sentient just as we are. Why were the Ancients at war with them? Well. Remember that tower? Yeah, there were a lot of those. And they were all made with Elder Dragon bones. Pretty sure you'd be mad at people for slaughtering your kin and turning their bones into skyscrapers. With all of that in mind, the Hunters HAD to be Superman without the laser beams and x-ray vision. However the Hunters that -we-, the players/watchers, are familiar with had their strength diluted due to breeding with non-Hunters, but they're still on-par with an un-armored Spartan from Halo...... at their absolute weakest. For reference, a Spartan wearing no armor is still perfectly capable of literally turning your spine to powder in seconds. The fight scene between the Hunter and Mila's character should have been over before it even started. Sure, he wasn't trying to end her. But on the same hand, he should have had her pinned on the ground pretty easily. Note: The strength of Hunters varies wildly by this point in the game's/movie's timeline due to the dilution. Some are WAY stronger than others........ for instance... In the games, the Admiral (who is in the movie portrayed by Ron Chinman) is capable of tearing chunks of the earth out from underneath him and using it as a tower shield, with his bare hands. He also doesn't even use weapons. He just fist fights every monster he comes across. The only one that upsets him is Rajang.... but that's okay, I get it. Rajang cheats. In the movie, the most the Admiral does is swing a Switch Axe around and (SOMEHOW) performs a Charge Blade's attack with it. Repeatedly. He must have downloaded some cheat-weapon mods. ....Anyway. That's enough nitpicking. TL;DR - Decent movie, even if it's a little slow compared to what you would actually expect from something related to Monster Hunter. Also is a mixed-bag when it comes to game vs. movie portrayals.

This was a a really good movie and the first I have ever written a review on. The reason why I rated this movie was for a couple reasons; one being that most of the bad reviews i've read were due to the fact that the movie didn't release on the correct date. Understandable, from a consumers point of view. That being said it does not make an accurate rating for the content of the movie itself and why I find this sad. The other reason is becuase I love stories and movies that have a fantasy flare to them, transmigration is an added plus. The story is about a Ranger squad investigating the disapearence of what I imagine was a scouting or patrol team out in the desert. Their last comms is played by the CPT off of her recorder -vThe missing teams TL voice crackling on comms asking for assistance with a storm fast approaching. The recording crackles more as the TL says again he needs assistance before the comms goes dead... It does not take long before history repeats itself and the Rangers find themselves caught in a similar storm. Once the dust clears they find themselves in a different envorment with mountains on the horizon. It has become evident that they are no longer where they ought to be. They make there way back toward the direction their FOB should be and come across a giant ribcage poking out of the sand. They do not have long to ponder or marvel at the shear wonder of such a thing as reality comes barreling toward them and their rescue mission turns into a mission of survival. The action is well done as is the pacing of the story. The CG was also well produced and the actors embodied their characters to make the movie more immersive. I originaly thought this was a low budget film but if it was then these guys knew how to stretch a dollar cus I dont have any complaints to say about the quality of the film. After watching this movie I knew I wanted to see a sequel, one that was left open to occur based on the ending and after credit scene. My biggest concern is the negative reviews that were solely based on when they got to see or own the movie. If you have seen the trailer and thought even for a second this might be interesting, buy it now... Thats all I have to say.
