Hundreds of Tons of Fish Carcasses Fill Greece’s Volos Port

More than 100 tons of fish carcasses have been collected in and around the port of Volos in central Greece, after a mass die-off of freshwater fish linked to extreme weather, authorities said Thursday.

The carcasses have filled the 320-kilometer (200-mile) wide bay north of Athens, and surrounding rivers. The water levels have risen due to flooding in 2023, following months of severe drought.

The incident has hit local businesses along the seafront, which, according to the Volos Chamber of Commerce, has reduced commercial activity by 80 percent in the past three days.

Fishing vessels have been hired by local authorities, along with EarthMovers, to collect the carcasses from the sea and load them onto trucks bound for an incinerator.

The fish came from Lake Karla in central Greece, which was drained in the early 1960s and restored in 2018 to combat the effects of drought.

"These millions of fish carcasses were carried by the current from Lake Karla and 20 kilometers (12 miles) to the east," Anna Maria Papadimitriou, deputy regional governor of the Testery Central area, told state-run television.

"There is currently a major effort underway to clean up the millions of fish carcasses that were washed up along the coastline and riverbanks ... an effort involving many contractors," she said.

Water levels rose suddenly in the fall of 2023 during a deadly storm that triggered widespread flooding in central Greece. However, low rainfall and successive summer heatwaves caused the waters to recede.

The mayor of Volos blamed regional authorities, accusing them of acting too slowly to address the situation. The city's Chamber of Commerce said it was taking legal action to seek compensation after a drop in commercial activity.

"Businesses along the seafront, especially in the catering industry, are now suspending operations," the Chamber said in a statement. "The stench along the seafront, disgusting to residents and visitors ... is a severe blow to tourism in Volos."
