IF ADULTS dressing up for “puppy play” to relieve stress sounds bizarre, it’s because it is. But these two Canberra men are part of a growing pack.
EVER been in a hurry to get out the door for a busy day at work and found yourself enviously glancing over at the sleeping dog or cat? If only I had a carefree life like that.
Well some people take this thought to a whole new level. In the kink scene, it’s called “ Puppy Play ”.
Human “pups” wear dog masks, collars, mittens, tails and harnesses. And just like a real dog, pups have “handlers” who dish out commands, affection and training. Handlers will even take their pups for a walk.
“It’s joyous, it’s absolutely joyous because there’s no worrying, there’s no: ‘Am I too fat, do I look good in this?’ There’s no self-consciousness,” 44-year-old Brand Pup from Canberra says to me (he requests we use his puppy name, rather than his human name for this story).
“It’s about really modifying your body temporarily in such a way that you inhabit the physicality of the puppy,” he continues.
When I bluntly suggest some people might view human puppy play as odd behaviour, Brand Pup responds with a hearty, barrel-chested laugh.
“It’s no more bonkers than as a small child dressing up and being a princess or a knight on a horse. It’s harmless, it’s fun, it’s something that happens between consenting adults,” he says, “and who is any one person to call someone else’s sanity, you know? We all live in various degrees of insanity.”
On the contrary, Brand Pup says this type of play is “a nice way of quieting the mind and being more in the moment” and “just responding in an immediate sense to your surroundings and what’s happening right now”.
For Brand Pup, “there’s a sense of fraternity in puppyhood and it is not necessarily only bounded by the edges of the pack.”
That’s right. Some handlers have “puppy packs.” Brand Pup says a pack may consist of just a couple of puppies — or in some cases more than a dozen.
Even though evidence of animal role-play has been around since at least the 1940s, Brand Pup believes puppy play has increased in popularity “over the last five to seven years.” He says this is especially true in countries like Germany, the United States, the United Kingdom and Australia.
Why? Well, one possible explanation is that it’s a reaction to our overstressed lives.
“Some people who find puppy play really rewarding are the people who ... have really high-pressure jobs and all sorts of things happening for them.
“They can come into being a pup and have the hood on and letting go of all of that stuff is such a break from the everyday,” Brand Pup says.
According to Brand Pup, a “whole spectrum” of people are involved in puppy play — gay people, straight people, men, women and everyone in between.
While he has been involved in puppy play for four years, Brand Pup’s 21-year-old friend Rike — yes, that’s a puppy name too — only took it up a few months ago. For Rike, it’s built his confidence and transformed life.
Before taking up this pastime, Rike describes his former self as “socially anxious” and “very, very insular.”
“There were times I had barely left my room for days,” he confesses.
Everything changed when Rike stumbled upon some YouTube videos of puppy play.
“I got really interested in the way they were talking about it … so I decided to have a closer look at it and I bought some gear and went and played for a night,” Rike says.
This wasn’t as easy as it sounds. Rike went along to an under 30s kink event in Canberra.
“I left the bathroom after getting changed I thought: ‘What am I doing? I could just go home … I shouldn’t have done this, this is a really bad idea’,” Rike recalls.
His panic subsided when another puppy and handler came over “and we played around for the night and it was a lot more fun than I thought it would be.”
“To know that I can do something like that and everything was OK and everyone was accepting, it’s a very amazing experience,” he says.
Rike echoes Brand Pup’s notion that puppy play allows all insecurities to fall by the wayside.
“Once I’m in that moment it doesn’t matter really what I do,” Rike says, “it’s quite relaxing and exciting at the same time.
“Putting the mask on does separate almost two personalities and … it does help you enter that [pup] mindset.”
After chatting for a while, Rike and Brand Pup don their leather gear and we go outside. Watching the pair engage in puppy play together in the garden is lighthearted and even funny at times. In practice, the puppy play is surprisingly affectionate.
Yet even so, Brand Pup’s height coupled with his handmade cowhide mask makes him appear momentarily intimidating.
“For some people it’s very much tied into the BDSM side of kink and for other people it isn’t,” Brand Pup says, “in my case it relates quite strongly to a more BDSM type of thing because it’s about power exchange. There’s a dominant and submissive thing going on with your handler.”
However, Brand Pup explains that for some pups, the experience is more straightforward than this: “They can be more interested in the freedom.”
While some pups like Rike prefer to play in private. Brand Pup doesn’t. He’s been known to dress up in full pup gear and visit various prominent Canberra locations including: the National Museum of Australia, the Australian National University and even Parliament House.
“For me going and being in public is about challenging perceptions and reducing stigma and getting people to realise that there’s all different types in this world and just to be a bit more open-minded,” he says.

“What’s with the tone?” He asked, raising an eyebrow and crossing his arms. She avoided his gaze, harboring her prickly attitude from his scrutiny. She had been talking back to him for the past few minutes, usually a case of the grumps.
He knew what would make her feel better. “Why are you so grumpy, puppy dog?” He said sweetly. “What happened to that waggy tail huh?”
She tried her best not to crack a smile. “I’m not a puppy right now,” she said stubbornly. He leaned his weight back against the kitchen counter in his mock disbelief.
“You’re not?! You’re not my little pup who is always such a good girl?” Sitting on the couch a few feet away, she tucked her legs under her and turned away from him so he wouldn’t see her serious facade falter.
“No…” He stepped over and went to scoop her up in his arms, but she dodged him. They faced off in the living room for a moment before he lunged to pick her up. She tried to flee, but his reach was too long. Securing his arms around her middle, he lifted her, still kicking, into the air.
“Gotcha!!” She laughed as he teased her sides. He set her down and motioned with his hand. “Now be a good girl. Sit.”
She clicked her tongue at him, “Nah.”
“My..my.” He paced over to the counter where her collar lay, picked it up, and walked slowly and deliberately back over. He knew she wouldn’t bolt again, and she confirmed his confidence with every step he took closer. Reaching out to her neck, he missed as she slipped out of his reach. In one sudden movement, he grabbed her forcefully. She fought him, but it was laughably futile. The collar was on. And his fingers slipped underneath the leather to direct her. He led her by her throat to the bedroom. She did not dare struggle against the tight collar, so she followed behind letting out complaints every step. He closed the door behind them. “Stay, puppy,” he said in a low tone. She paced a little in the room while he opened the locked trunk in her closet. Then he was lunging again; pinning her arms against her back and her body to the bed, he quickly got to work on a pair of rope cuffs.
She growled into the comforter as he secured her wrists to each other, then he flipped her over and pulled her cuffed wrists to the front of her chest over her head.
“Are you going to be my good puppy yet?”
“No. I’m not! I’m a lady!” She taunted, tossing her head haughtily.
“Tsk. Tsk.” He lashed her wrists to her thighs and her thighs to her ankles. She was immobile.
“You just wait until I get out of this!” She warned him, “you big butt!
He looked at her in mild curiosity, walked into the closet and brought out a gag. He buckled it, then roughly forced the silicone ball into her mouth. “No, pup. Bad mouth.”
He disappeared into the closet again, and in less than a minute, produced a leather pup hood.
“Hey puppy, I found your muzzle! This is perfect. Want to put it on? ….. is that silence a yes? I think so.”
As he got closer, she started to push against the ropes, twisting her neck to avoid the impending bondage. He wrapped his fingers under her collar and held her still, “Shhhshshsh shh…Good giiiirrll…That’s a good girl, stay still for me.” He began strapping the hood into place, one buckle at a time, whispering in her ear. “You’re going to be my obedient dog, my good little pup. You’re going to listen to me and do what I say. You are not to speak or use your hands.” And filthier.
“When I want to use you, you will present to me like the dog in heat you are. Your little puppy cunt is mine. My name is on that tag–I own you. You obey me.” He buckled the last strap in place, clicked the locks shut, and let go of her neck. Her eyes looked up at him, glossed over in submission, out from the holes in the black leather mask, a wholly changed mind. A little whimper escaped her throat. “There we go, much better. You look like a perfect puppy. Speak.”
“Woof!” She barked in earnest.
“Very good.” He scratched under her collar and behind her ears.
He untied her and helped her slip on protective padding for her knees and wrists. Clipping a leash to her collar, he noticed her ass begin to wag. “That’s my girl.” He smiled.

The Happy Pup
The Essential Guide To Puppy Play & Pup Play Gear

You are here: Home > news > My First Human Puppy Training: Posture
By Gpup on October 5, 2012 in Puppy Play
At my pack Sirius Pups I am proud to be the Alpha pup serving my Boss an expert in human puppy training. Pup training has opened my heart and my mind. Never in my dreams did I imagine I would ever find a pack, a master and a cool pup brother to share my play with. I consider myself a very lucky pup indeed.
As a reminder to me but also for pups that may join the pack I wanted to share some of the human puppy training guides, or as they are called at Sirius Pups: first collar trainings and their meaning to me. The first training I had as a Sirius Pup was posture.
I will always remember my first meeting with Sir. As I entered I was initially unsure of what to expect, I was nervous. The first instruction I received as a pup was:
While I was not 100% sure of what to do I went with my instincts. Knee’s down, feet tucked under and fists on my knees. Exactly as I am pictured above. This was my first command in my journey, my first go to present proud for my master. I knew then and there I was destined for pup hood.
In the present position I started to notice a few cool things. The world looks different from the floor. Looking up at Sir I was able to start to get an understanding of his role. Not menacing, not cruel, he simply looked down and rubbed behind my ear and said those magic words… Good dog.
In that training I also learned to “kneel” and “all fours”. Each feels different, each has a different role. In present I am alert yet relaxed. Kneel and I’m watching master for my next command. Sometimes that is for a treat or even better to be marked. When kneeled Sir has access to my back and front to mark, loading my skin with his wonderful scent.
In all fours my ass is proud, my tail is wagging and I’m feeling very much in pup space. I often watch my dogs at home, and how they interact from this position. My male is very playful and from this position he will bow when he’s ready for play. While biopup training is different from human puppy training there are certainly many parallels that I’ve noticed.
In this first session of human puppy training I also received two treasured pieces of pup gear. My puppy tail and my very first collar. I’ll be sharing more about this in my next post.
