I find Jays very difficult to photograph as in my area they are extremely shy and wary of humans. Although I know they can often become indifferent to humans in urban parks where they are not persecuted. It took me ages to manage a half-decent photograph of a Jay, then my next target was to capture one with its crest raised. Yesterday I achieved this ambition when I was photographing a nesting Tawny Owl. This Jay spotted the owl and started calling and raising its crest in agitation. I turned my attentions from Owl to Jay and managed to capture this photo with its crest raised high in a Mohican style. There was the added bonus that it perched on a photogenic moss-covered oak branch too.
In the breeding season Jays can become extraordinarily elusive as anyone who has done a bird race during May will testify. They become much more obvious in the autumn when the oak trees produce acorns. Acorns are definitely their favourite food and during the short period that acorns are available they go into overdrive. Amazingly each Jay can cache up to 5000 acorns in a season, storing up to 9 acorns in its crop as it goes off to hide them. It remembers where most of them are as a necessary food store during winter and can even find them under snow. Perhaps even more amazingly, it is thought that Jays are largely responsible for the distribution of oak trees in Britain and Europe. If you think about it, acorns drop directly downwards so would normally germinate where they land (under the parent tree). But because Jays hide their acorns far and wide, and they don't remember where they hid all of them, oak trees get a hand dispersing their acorns. Its scientific name is Garrulus glandarius. Garrulus means chattering and glandarius means pertaining to acorns. The Latin word for acorn is glans, which is also the name for the head of the penis, so named because its shape resembles an acorn.
Finally, when I worked at RSPB I had a colleague who's name was Jay (her father was a keen birdwatcher). She was from Wales and she once told me that the Welsh name for Jay was Ysgrech y coed which translates as screecher of the woods, and that her teacher unkindly said it was a very appropriate name for her, because (she said) she was rather garrulous.

Only joking. At 62, I'm terrified of getting an erection in case it's my last!
My teenage daughter and some male friends 'sculpted' this 'Santa' this evening. I never realized that a prick is basically a bunch of varicose veins. They're going to finish the job tomorrow but, I told them that I'm not going to waste one of my extra large condoms.

Statue of Alexander Wood at the corner of Church and Alexander streets in Toronto
Alexander Wood (January 1772 – September 11, 1844) was a Scottish merchant and magistrate in Upper Canada who was the centre of a sex scandal in 1810.[1]
Wood was born at Fetteresso near Stonehaven, Scotland, and he moved to Upper Canada in 1793,[1] settling in the town of York (now Toronto) four years later. His original home was located on King Street, between Bay and York Streets, in the heart of what is now Toronto's Financial District.[2] Going into business with William Allan, he established himself as one of the city's leading merchants, was gazetted lieutenant in the York militia in 1798, and was appointed a city magistrate in 1800.[1] In 1801, Wood opened his own store providing quality goods imported from London and Glasgow.[1] The first sidewalk of Toronto was laid on the northwest corner of his King and Frederick shop.[3]
In 1810, Wood found himself at the centre of a scandal when he investigated a rape case. The victim, referred to as Miss Bailey, came to Wood claiming that she did not know the identity of her attacker, however she had scratched her assailant's penis during the assault.[1] In order to identify the assailant, Wood personally inspected the genitals of a number of suspects for injury. There is no evidence on the public record that Wood acted improperly during the investigation,[4][5] nor indeed of Wood's actual sexual orientation;[4] however, contradictory rumours began to emerge about his conduct, including allegations that Miss Bailey never existed at all and that Wood had fabricated the rape charge as an opportunity to fondle and seduce young men.[1]
When confronted with the charges by his friend, Judge William Dummer Powell, Wood wrote back, "I have laid myself open to ridicule & malevolence, which I know not how to meet; that the thing will be made the subject of mirth and a handle to my enemies for a sneer I have every reason to expect."[1] Wood became the subject of ridicule and was tagged with the nickname "Molly Wood", "Molly" then being a derisive slang expression for a homosexual man.[1] John Robinson, at the time a young law clerk in Powell's office, called Wood the "Inspector General of private Accounts."[1]
Judge Powell buried the potential sodomy charges on condition that Wood leave Upper Canada,[1] and Wood left for Scotland in October 1810.
Wood returned to York by 1812, resuming his prior appointment as a magistrate. He fought in the War of 1812 and was on the boards of several organizations. His life in York continued without incident until 1823, when Rev. John Strachan, a longtime friend of Wood's, recommended him for a position on the 1812 War Claims Commission.[1] Judge Powell was the appointing authority and refused Wood on moral grounds due to the 1810 scandal.[1] Wood sued Powell for defamation and won, but Powell refused to pay and subsequently published a pamphlet attacking Wood even further.[1]
Wood remained in York, continuing his service in civic duties for the next seventeen years. In 1827 he purchased 50 acres (0.2 km²) of land at Yonge and Carlton Streets, which was referred to as "Molly Wood's Bush" throughout the 19th century.[6]
Alexander Wood finally returned to Scotland in 1842 and he died there two years later at the age of 72.[1] The British Colonist paid tribute to Wood as one of Toronto's most distinguished founding citizens.[1]
Wood had never married — and neither had any of his brothers and sisters, all of whom were themselves already deceased by the time of Wood's death — and he consequently had no legal heirs.[1] Owing to differences between Scottish and Canadian estate law, it took seven years after his death for the Court of Session and the British House of Lords to decide that his estate would be divided up under Scottish, rather than Canadian, law.[1] His estate thus passed to a first cousin once removed in 1851.[1]
The area once known as Molly Wood's Bush is now part of Toronto's Church and Wellesley gay village, and contains an Alexander Street, a Wood Street and an Alexander Place.[4][3]
In 1994, playwrights John Wimbs and Christopher Richards launched a play entitled Molly Wood, based on Wood's life. This production garnered Dora Awards for Best New Play and Best Production in 1995.
In 2005, the Church and Wellesley business association erected a statue of Wood in the neighbourhood, honouring him as a forefather of Toronto's modern gay community.[4] The statue by sculptor Del Newbigging was unveiled on May 28, 2005.[4] The $200,000 cost was shared by the business association and the City of Toronto.[4] The statue incorporates a rose on the lapel of Wood's coat, in a secondary nod to Pierre Elliott Trudeau, the prime minister at the time homosexuality was decriminalized in Canada.[4]
Also in 2005, the business association launched a beer named for Wood. Alexander Wood Lager was brewed by Lakes of Muskoka Cottage Brewery and was marketed exclusively to bars in the Church and Wellesley area.[7]
On June 8, 2021, the Church-Wellesley Village BIA called for the removal of the statue because of the involvment of Alexander Wood in the Society for Converting and Civilizing the Indians and Propagating the Gospel Among Destitute Settlers in Upper Canada which contributed to the organization of the residential school system in Canada.
The Alexander Wood Letterbooks, which are in the collection of the Baldwin Room at the Toronto Public Library, are widely used as a resource for researching trade in early Upper Canada. Source: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alexander_Wood_(merchant)
Why did building security hand me a pass with an erect penis on it?
Okay, so I publish a magazine in Second LIfe called Attention SL. I don't know if you've heard of it or not. We publish monthly, it's a lifestyle magazine featuring stuff in SL.
Our longest running feature is our Flickr Section that always comes at the end. I've met a lot of amazing artists through this section, come to know and love their work and it's a huge amount of fun for me to put together this collection every month.
Having said that, I have come up with some pet peeves. Things that I see every month or trends that have cropped up and refuse to die.
This is not a slap at any particular person. I'll put in something about myself straight away, just so I'm in on the criticism. I hope you all chime in with one of yours, tell me where you agree or educate me if I sound stupid.
1. Women who persistently post close-up photos of their own avatar, usually naked, in a black box, like it's nothing we've ever seen before, then wait expectantly for applause because she's a massive attentionwhore. (see what I did there?)
2. Those cheesy grins that you see everywhere. Stop it. It's creepy. If your avatar doesn't look right when it smiles, fix your avatar.
3. Eyes that stare blankly off in some awkward direction like they are dead inside. I get depressed and feel badly for these poor avatars. SOMEONE SAVE THEM!
4. Desperately centered photos. Stop it. Stop it now. Only your mom takes photos with everything dead center. (Okay, my mom does. Her vacation snaps are the worst. She goes to places and takes photos of her ancient friends and nothing of the scenery, but that doesn't stop her from wanting to show them to me. Including the duplicates.)
5. Harshly lit faces. Just because you have a cool lighting system (LUMIPro, love you) doesn't mean you need to turn up the high beams on your face. Find the sliders. Turn down the glare.
6. Fish Eye. If you don't know what this is, please google it. The fix is simple: CNTRL Zero until you are as close as you want to be, resposition your camera, snap. Then CNTRL 9 to get your camera pulled back away. You're welcome.
7. No Depth of Field. This is a forgiveable sin, DoF is hard to learn. But once you do, come on! A whole new world awaits!
8. Too much DoF. There's such a thing as too much. Or maybe you've gone crazy in post.
9. People who get mad at me when I don't use one of their photos. Hint: I probably never saw it.
10. People who send me links to their photos to make sure I can see them. Come on .... play fair!
11. People who get mad at me for not using their photos, when in fact a) I can't download it b) there's an erect penis in the shot or c) they never posted it in the group.
12. People who create gorgeous photos ... then can't decide which one they want to use, so they divide the picture in half and show two views. Be decisive! Red pill, blue pill! There's no purple pill in the Matrix! Choose!
13. People who make lists like this one.
14. A great new pose / dress / hair comes out and eleventy billion people make a picture of it. Now I'm stuck with a repetitive Flickr section or having to be the one doing the choosing. Sigh.
15. People who have a new "love of my life" just about every month or so. Then they break up right as I go to press and I feel AWKWARD using the photo. What to do?
17. The Niramyth Aesthetic Body. Same.
18. Armpit poses. You know what I mean. The model has his/hear hand on her head and the photographer decides to put that pit front and center. The mesh gets yanked out in every direction and it looks god awful. All you had to do was turn the model 45 degrees and you had a winner winner, Chicken dinner.
19. Did I mention centering and those creepy smiles?
20. Dudes who are still rocking the Catwa Daniel head and haven't been arsed to find a different skin for it.
21. Redheads with super orange skin.
21b. Designers who won't make nice skins for redheads.
22. When you see an ad and think it's for the most amazing hair / dress you've ever seen, then realize it's for a shape and now you need to pay $400L to find out where they got it. (And yes, I would pay. They deserve to make money for my crazy.)
23. All of the amazing people who post to my group every month, but their photos aren't downloadable. Let this be the year you change your mind! Release the hounds! At the very least, make me a member of your family. I'm dying to show your work off like the good little fangirl I am.

Everyone has a set of bog standard illustrations that they can produce on an inviting canvas. Just like most people have one tune that they can play on an instrument, or one football trick or one sexual position which they excel at.
I cannot be left in front of a blank board or piece of paper without feeling compelled to produce one of my party pieces. I also can’t be left in a bar with pistachio nut shells without producing a phallus.
Give me a score board for darts at the pub and a piece of chalk and I shall draw a fully labelled anatomical drawing of the fallopian tubes.
I have gone through in my mind the images that I am most likely to produce in any given situation:
- One of my university vehicle designs – usually the one that looks like a sperm.
- A shark savaging someone (I once had to copy out an illustration of John the Baptist in RE at school; we were told to trace it exactly. I just had to embellish; drawing him stubbing every one of his toes on a rock in the water and the subsequent red stained horror that ensued as people wearing sacks watched his toes float downstream.)
Now these usually happen after wine…
- Giant woodland fungus-like penis with comedy hairy balls.
- Female genitalia in abstract – rather like a melted dart board with a jelly tot at the top.
- Female porn star/super-heroine with unfeasibly big breasts. This works great on the side of white vans.
- A cat’s bum with tail erect and labelled ‘tea towel holder’ – that one I put on the Tate modern comments board.
So we all have a little repertoire of doodles. They probably give away terrible flaws in our personalities. If I were a psychologist what would I glean from my favoured sketches?! A sexually frustrated/obsessed potential lesbian with penis envy and major bloodlust who likes long hairy mushrooms and big engines that you sit astride and perhaps even with slight zoophilic tendencies?! I did used to write HORSES ARE SKILL all over my lunchbox when other people were writing EMILY 4 BEN.
Obscene incidents within the financial administration
Coming from San Marco, it's on the right-hand side of the Rialto bridge. Looking more closely, you'll be able to make out two fairly obscene reliefs that have in fact, a great deal to do with the history of the Rialto bridge: one shows a man with a disproportionately huge penis in the shape of a nail, the other shows a female figure with her intimate parts placed over a flame-spewing votive bowl. The two figures illustrated one and the same story surrounding the construction of the Rialto bridge. After the wooden bridge had rotted or burned down several times, in 1507 the city administration decided to erect a stone bridge across the Canal. Decades of arguments about financing and design ensued, spurring the residents of San Polo, consisting of prostitutes, market traders, vendors and craftsmen, to make sardonic remarks. The man would call out: "Sto ponte i lo finira quando ch'ecl casso fara l'ongia" (if this bridge will ever be finished my penis will turn into a nail), and
