PASTRY ROLL Get the extra clothes off baby and enjoy skin to skin touch on these warm days ☀️ Make sure all movements are safe and gentle. Lie the child on a mat on the floor with sufficient space to stretch right out and roll over. • By stroking and massaging the entirety of the child’s body the child will strengthen their knowledge of themselves and their body parts. • Massage, and downward stroking, are restful and soothing. … • Skin to skin touch builds a relationship of trust. Help the little one to roll over either by turning from the shoulders (younger babies) or by gently crossing one leg over the other (older babies). Crossing the legs over draws the body over to follow. Release arms from under shoulders if they are pinned. • Rolling over helps a child develop core strength and is the first step of developing mobility. • The understanding of body parts is reinforced as different parts touch the floor in turn, throughout the motion. • The balance receptors (vestibular system) in the ears gets stimulated. This is just part of the turning, rolling, and tipping actions which are all necessary to develop the important sense of balance from a young age. As always if, for some (probably unrelated) reason, the child doesn’t want to do any activity stop and try again another time.
Some songs for our sunny weather. Enjoy!

We love playing Kazachok by Leah Munroe - especially fast!
Another piece from our recent Nortth Shore Marimba Festival. Grace and Favour by Jon Madin
Another piece in our final rehearsal before the North Shore Marimba Festival yesterday: Old Town Road. Great to play music together, right by the lake, on a sunny day!
Yesterday our kids played at the North Shore Marimba Festival. In a year when so many other events were cancelled, it was great to be able to get together with more kids and PLAY MUSIC! Here is our last rehearsal of Boris the Bassman by John Madin.
Three and four year olds 'grow beautiful flowers' in our concert. First we create the scene by pretending to grow like little seeds. The rain falls on the seeds then they sprout and grow... Then, once we know the song through movement, we can play the song on chime bars.
Do Your Ears Hang Low? They certainly did for our 6-7 year olds recently.
More highlights from our family concert. 6 year olds playing rhythms in parts.
We had a great time at our family concert last weekend. Thanks for joining in, everyone! This is our 6-7yr old group playing 'Do Your Ears Hang Low'.
'How Music Can Help All Learning' As we begin a new term of learning through music this inspiring interview aired on Radio NZ.
At KMC, we have seen the power of music to support learning for decades but now there is new research.
Yay! Alert Level 1. This means we can happily run our face to face classes again.
There are so many benefits for including purpose-built music in the lives of little ones. Music can be the ‘vehicle’ of so much learning.
What a strange year it has been. Here is some much needed restful music to help children (and all of us) relax. The tracks are all instrumental. They start slowly and get even slower, helping to lower the heart rate and promote rest.
