У многих людей, живущих сегодня, присутствует незначительный процент ДНК, доставшийся от других видов людей, таких как неандертальцы, денисовцы и флоресские «хоббиты». Предположительно, межвидовое скрещивание играло важную роль в становлении современного человека, и наша эволюционная история напоминает не родовое древо, а переплетенную ткань ковра.

Чтобы собрать эти данные, ученым пришлось постараться: древняя ДНК редко сохраняется в ископаемых образцах, поэтому опознавать возможных гибридов в основном приходится по скелетам. Собрав большое количество ископаемых останков древних людей из верхнего палеолита Евразии, датируемых примерно 20-40 тысячами лет назад, ученые исследовали сохранившиеся фрагменты ДНК и проанализировали форму черепов, сравнив ее с черепами неандертальцев, живших до прихода человека разумного в Европу, и африканскими черепами Homo sapiens .
Исследователи особое внимание уделяли трем областям черепа: нижней челюсти, черепной коробке и лицу, где искали характерные признаки гибридизации, например аномалии зубов или необычные размеры. Эти черты и сегодня характерны для многих межвидовых гибридов млекопитающих, включая приматов.
Оказалось, гибриды неандертальцев и людей современного типа жили не только на Ближнем Востоке — месте контакта двух видов, — но и в Западной и Восточной Европе.
