The 25th Annual Webby Awards Call for Entries is now closed. Below is a list of the 2020/2021 CATEGORIES & DEFINITIONS for all eight category types.
The Webby Awards accepts eight types of entries: Websites and Mobile Sites, honors to celebrate the best Websites designed for any screen including desktop and mobile, including features like Aesthetic Design and User Experience to, Humor and News sites; Advertising, Media & PR, honors for the breadth of the digital advertising, including innovative PR, Branded Content, Media and Integrated work; Video that premiered Online, from Documentaries, Series & Channels, Performance and Craft, Branded Entertainment and more; Social, across all platforms, from the best Sports, Music and Experimental & Innovation to News & Information, The Webbys honors the scope of the social media including Overall Social Presence, Content Series & Campaigns, Video and more; and Podcasts, recognizing outstanding work in podcast Individual Episodes, Series and Limited Series, across Business, Crime & Justice, Diversity & Inclusion, Best Host, and Best Writing and more; Games, honors for outstanding work in games across mobile, social, and browser platforms, from Strategy and Puzzles and Trivia, to User Experience, Best Music/Sound Design, Best Game Design, and more.
New honors this year for outstanding Software Services & Platforms; Virtual & Remote, honors for exceptional work in creating and executing virtual or remote experiences including conferences, concerts, events, and work in Virtual Reality and 360-Video; Apps and Software, the Webbys honors the range of applications, experiences across handheld, tablet, and OTT. This year the Webbys will honor the inaugural suite of Software Services & Platform categories, from Customer Management to Productivity & Collaboration to Creative Production and more.

The Webby Awards recognizes outstanding Websites, designed for any screen including desktop and mobile, in a variety of categories. Sites entered into multiple categories will be reviewed separately for each category entered. Websites entered into more than one category may win multiple awards.
The Webby Awards recognizes outstanding Video in a multitude of categories within four category types including; Features, General Video, Performance & Craft, Video Series & Channels and Branded Entertainment.  An entry may be entered into multiple categories if appropriate. Sites facilitating political change, social movement, human rights, public education and reform, or revolution.
Architecture, Art & Design
Sites that feature architecture and design, including commercial and residential structures, homes and apartments, exterior and interior design, industrial design or display or promote art of any medium, art galleries, art auctions, or content focused on art criticism or the art world.
Associations
Sites for industry or trade associations or groups.
Business Blog/Website
Sites or blogs created by individuals, groups, or companies for professional and business related topics.
Car Sites & Car Culture
Sites that feature car culture, performance, and services, including review sites, online resources, pricing guides, and fan forums.
Charitable Organizations/Non-Profit
Sites for charities and charitable organizations whose primary purpose is helping people or other worthy causes
Community
Sites creating and facilitating online community, connectedness, and/or communication around shared interests. These sites can target either a broad-based or niche audience and can include social media sites.
Corporate Communications
Sites that serve as online identities for corporations, organizations, businesses, or professional individuals. These sites may promote, market, or provide information and a point of contact for products, services, corporate individuals, or companies involved in online or offline commerce.
Corporate Social Responsibility
Sites that showcase a company's commitment to encouraging community growth and development, and to activities and programs that benefit the environment, consumers, employees, and the public.
Cultural Blog/Website
Sites or blogs created by individuals, groups, or companies that cover cultural, lifestyle, or entertainment topics.
Cultural Institutions
Sites for museums, parks, zoos, gardens, aquariums, theaters, arenas, and any other institutions of cultural significance.
Diversity & Inclusion
Sites that celebrate and/or promote diversity and inclusion of all kinds (racial, gender, neurological, etc.).
Education
Sites that are educational, promote education, or provide online curriculum or education services. This category includes educational content for children or adults, resources for educators, and "distance learning" courses. Does not include school or higher education sites; see School/University.
Email Newsletters
Subscriber-based newsletters sent via email. Such as general interest, communal, business, retail, and customer relationship management.
Employment
Sites featuring job and employment listings, job and career search services, recruiting services, career advice, headhunting, or other career or job-related information.
Entertainment
Sites developed for the distribution of entertainment content or focused on the entertainment industry; including, sports, games, news, gossip, humor, reviews, or promoting a specific celebrity or group.
Events
Sites devoted to promoting and generating engagement around events and/or to promoting and hosting live events online.
Fashion & Beauty
Sites that feature personal style, clothing, design, accessories, makeup, or beauty products. These include fashion and beauty editorial and style guide sites.
Financial Services/Banking
Sites providing financial services and/or information. These include online stock trading, financial news, mortgage information, credit cards, or investor relations and services.
Food & Drink
Sites that cover the culinary world, including food culture, restaurants, recipes, cooking, and products.
Government & Civil Innovation
Sites providing information and services pertaining to government matters. These include sites that enable online citizen action, offer self-help information, publish government documents and forms, and provide access to services provided by government agencies.
Health & Wellness
Sites that provide information on personal health and well-being. These include medical, alternative medicine, health and lifestyle, mental health, and fitness.
Humor
Sites dedicated to comedy or the art of laughter.
Law
Sites for law firms, legal service providers, pro-bono legal services, and self-help legal information that feature content on legal issues, trials, court decisions, or legal advocacy.
Lifestyle
Sites featuring commentary, commerce, and advice on lifestyle and living topics such as gardening, home improvement, interior design, architecture, and like subjects. Sites touching on the personal side of life by providing information and resources that allow people to live on their own terms.
Magazine
Sites that are online editions or companions to offline business or consumer magazines, or magazine sites published only online.
Media Streaming
Sites that offer audio or video streaming services, such as television, sports, film, music, podcasts, news, and radio.
Music
Sites devoted to discussing and/or promoting music and music culture. Includes band sites, music blogs, and review sites.
NetArt
Projects that integrate art and technology, exploring and expanding the distinctive capacity of the medium. Projects must include a web-based component and may include an offline element.
News & Politics
Sites developed for the distribution of news, current events and politics. These may be offshoots of established broadcast or other existing news operations, or developed specifically for online news.
Personal Blog/Website
Sites and blogs created by an individual. These personal sites are created by you about you, by you about someone else, by someone else about you, or by you about something you are passionate about. Portfolio sites are not accepted in this category. They should be entered in Professional Services & Self-Promotion.
Professional Services & Self-Promotion
Sites for professional service firms including consultants of any type, accountants, and other business service providers.
Real Estate
Sites marketing or promoting the sale or rental of residential or commercial real estate, including real estate listings, brokers and brokerage services, real estate agents, and sites for developments, buildings, or other real estate holdings.
School/University
Sites for schools (high school, secondary school, elementary school), specialty school, technical school, colleges, universities, and other schools.
Science
Sites distributing information related to scientific exploration. These include science exhibits, science museums, science organizations, science laboratories, and academic institutions.
Shopping
Sites providing consumers online commerce and retail sales of any products or services.
Sports
Sports-focused sites that feature original content about games and events, athletes, sports history and culture, statistics, etc.
Sustainability & Environment
Sites that focus on sustainability or environmental issues including concerns for environmental conservation and improvement of the state of the environment. Specific examples include recycling or energy blogs, websites announcing "green" corporate initiatives, conservation-focused sites that provide tips on how to be more environmentally conscious.
Television & Film
Sites that provide information and content related to specific television shows and/or networks and movies/film.
Travel
Sites that provide travel services and information. These include online agents for purchasing tickets, hotel rooms, rental cars, vacation packages, and other travel services. Includes online travel guides, travel writing, and travel tools.
Web Services & Applications
Sites or web/desktop apps that help people accomplish tasks online, including editing photos, creating/sending documents, finding jobs and homes, and scheduling events.
Weird
Sites that just seem strange, offbeat, or odd. This category includes sites that reflect a fresh perspective in thought and action strong enough to start a revolution, change a behavior pattern, or advance old thinking lodged in bad habits—or that are just plain weird.
Best Data Visualization
Only data visualization aspects of a site will be judged. Websites that demonstrate best-in-class use of data visualization by representing complex datasets in innovative, visually appealing, and easily comprehensible ways.
Best Homepage
Only home page is judged. Sites that set an industry standard of excellence for home page design.
Best Individual Editorial Feature - Ind/Brand/Org
Best individual or multi-part article enhanced by the addition of innovative interaction design components and multimedia storytelling elements. Work entered here is created by an individual, organization, or brand.
Best Individual Editorial Feature - Media Company
Best individual or multi-part article enhanced by the addition of innovative interaction design components and multimedia storytelling elements. Work entered here is created by media companies.
Best Navigation/Structure
Sites that offer the best-possible user experience through superior navigation and site structure. Only information architecture will be judged.
Best Practices
Best Practices sites serve as an industry benchmark for the most current, innovative, and advanced practices in web development; from offering personalized data experiences and beyond. Sites must demonstrate unparalleled excellence across the Academy's six criteria: content, structure, navigation, visual design, interactivity, functionality, and overall experience.
Best Use of Animation or Motion Graphics
Sites that integrate animation or motion graphics in a seamless, superior way that enhances the user experience. Only animation and motion graphics judged.
Best Use of Photography
Only photography as it's used throughout the site is judged. Geared toward sites that rely heavily on photographic imagery as a critical part of the user experience.
Best Use of Video or Moving Image
Sites that incorporate video and/or moving images in a way that enhances the user experience and generates engagement. Only video or moving images judged.
Best User Experience
Sites that offer the best user experience through innovative design, and useful functionality.
Best User Interface
Sites that set an industry standard of excellence for user interface design by creating a seamless experience for end users.
Best Visual Design - Aesthetic
Only visual design judged. Geared toward sites and experiences where visual design is intended to be beautiful, emotional, and appeal to the senses.
Best Visual Design - Function
Only visual design functionality judged. Sites that set an industry standard of excellence by relying on visual design as a critical part of a functional user experience.
Best Writing (Editorial)
Sites that demonstrate excellence in editorial, whether in journalism, breaking news, opinion or blog writing, humor writing, analysis, etc. Only editorial writing will be judged in this category.
Technical Achievement
This category is for any site that sets an industry standard by using new, innovative web technology in an outstanding way that improves the overall experience.
Best Mobile User Experience
Sites designed for mobile that offer the best user experience through innovative design, personalized data experiences, and useful functionality.
Best Mobile User Interface
Sites designed for mobile that set an industry standard of excellence with their user interface design.
Best Mobile Visual Design - Aesthetic
Only visual design judged. Sites designed for mobile where visual design aesthetic is intended to be beautiful, innovative, emotional, and appeal to the senses.
Best Mobile Visual Design - Function
Only visual design judged. Sites designed for mobile that set an industry standard of excellence by relying on visual design as a critical part of a functional user experience.
Best Responsive/Adaptive Design for Mobile
Sites designed for mobile that set an industry standard of excellence of design that is responsive/adaptive based on the device/screen size/browser of the user.
