From Calgary, it will take about two hours to get to Lake Louise. The best way to get to Lake Louise from Calgary is to rent a car for your trip to Banff. See below for the details on how to get to Lake Louise from wherever you may be:. You have a few options for parking at Lake Louise , but for most visitors, there are really only a few viable options. Many of the other Lake Louise hotels in the village offer a shuttle, or you can take advantage of the public shuttle bus for those staying at the Lake Louise Campground. For everyone else staying elsewhere, like in Banff or Canmore, you can arrive early in the morning and snag one of the valuable public parking spots at the lake. This is now a paid parking lot 7am to 7pm daily and typically fills up before , if not earlier in the summer. While the parking lot is free, you are required to have a paid reservation on the shuttle bus to Lake Louise. It is not in effect in the winter. You cannot park overnight at Lake Louise lakeshore. The lake is regularly cleared of snow and resurfaced, so visitors can enjoy ice skating during the winter despite conditions on other natural lakes. Lake Louise, every few winters, can freeze very early before a significant snowfall, and the result is a blue glass lake. The lake freezing like this has also only happened five times in the last 30 years. In Lake Louise literally froze over enough for five hours of enjoyment, before a big snowstorm hit and covered it. The areas around Lake Louise are extreme avalanche terrain, and slides happen often, and deaths have occurred. Proper avalanche training even for snowshoeing is recommended in the Canadian Rockies. The ice on Lake Louise usually melts the first week of June. This is season-dependent, so it has occasionally thawed earlier and sometimes a little later. Lake Louise usually begins to freeze in November. The month of October usually brings heavy snowfall in the area, and the Lake Louise Ski Resort usually opens up the first week of November around the same time the lake freezes. We had the best vantage point from our front-row seat with a huge window and an unobstructed view of the large black bear. The bear was later circling a camper van, likely in search of food. Back in the day, pioneers traveled the mountains and valleys on horseback. Today, you can find a variety of trail rides and overnight excursions in Banff and Lake Louise areas. Horseback excursions bring you close to nature and forge an intimate connection with the pristine beauty of the Canadian Rockies. You can choose short rides around Banff and Lake Louise or take overnight backcountry hut trips and pack trips. Horseback trail rides typically open in mid-April. We took a horseback trail ride in Jasper , which was very different from the horseback safari in Victoria Falls in Zambia. If you have any recommendations, please do share. Lake Louise Gondola is used by skiers in winter and for hikers in summer. It also has a nice wildlife interpretive center. We visited the gondola in Banff and it was spectacular. If you have taken the Lake Louise gondola in summer, please do share your experience. Banff National Park has dozens of spectacular hikes in the great outdoors. For more information check Parks Canada. There is a hike for every difficulty level and duration starting at Lake Louise parking lot or the lake. Here are some favorites. Some trails start by the railway station in Lake Louise Village. There are many more hikes just a few miles from Lake Louise. Some of these start at Lake Moraine parking lot and others not too far. Lake Louise village is about 50km north of the town of Banff. Yes, there is a lovely hike around Lake Louise. Most people walk from the parking lot towards Chateau Lake Louise to the lake. You can walk left towards the canoe rental shop and through the hike in the woods behind the shop. Also, you can walk right and continue on the path up to the trails. It takes about 1 hour to walk around Lake Louise. But it depends on how many stops you make. We walked short distances in both directions from the parking lot. After taking some pictures and returned to the starting point. It was fun watching canoers, paddleboarders, and tourists from around the world on the beautiful Lake Louise. We rented a car in Calgary but there is ample public transit and tours to get you to Lake Louise. From the parking lot, shuttles take visitors to the lake every few minutes. The drive from through the Canadian Rockies is a destination in itself. Yes, you can drive to Lake Louise and park in the large parking lot. However, the parking fills up in peak summer, and visitors are advised to park in the designated parking lot by the freeway south of Lake Louise village. During peak season, you have a better chance of finding parking in the early morning or late evening times. We found parking when we visited during an afternoon when there was a rain forecast and it was drizzling on and off. The weather had motivated most visitors to head to the towns so we were able to park at the lakes and enjoy them with other visitors. Kelly April 22, am.
