Is it worth the hype? These were my thoughts before packing my life into a 75L backpack and moving to Puerto Vallarta, Mexico one month ago. I needed a city with good wifi, a beach necessity , and a community of cool humans. From what I heard, Puerto Vallarta seemed to have it all. I was here 5 years. In , I hitch-hiked up from the Guatemala border to Guadalajara, Mexico. When I left Mexico I knew I would one day come back to live here. I laughed then walked across the street to a little restaurante for some wifi to figure out what to do next. I drank a limonada, sweating from the Mexican heat and from carrying everything I own on my back across a hilly pedestrian bridge. I made it, I thought. After 7 years of nomadic life, I still get nervous arriving to a new place. The good kind of nerves. I chatted with the waiter in Spanish, my shitty Spanish slowly coming back to me. After I finished, I asked for la cuenta the check and prayed they had a card machine. So, I overpaid in dollars. I pretended to think about it and he lowered the price a few pesos. I agreed while not remembering the dollar to peso conversion rate and not having any pesos in my wallet. Puerto Vallarta is absolutely stunning. The streets are lined with palm trees. This city has the comfort and convenience of American stores while still preserving the flavor of Mexico. I had manifested my life here. The hostel is outside of the center, about a minute walk to the downtown area and a 5-minute walk to the beach. One retired, divorced year-old man from Syria who owns a condo in Argentina and is waiting for the borders to open back up. One year-old guy from Colorado who came here for a 2-week vacation who decided to quit his job and stay in Mexico two days before his departure date. One Canadian woman in her mid-thirties who got divorced and sold everything who plans to travel slowly around the world. Puerto Vallarta is a resort city on the Pacific coast of Mexico. It is filled with restaurants, beautiful beaches, a cute downtown area, and is surrounded by majestic mountains. Puerto Vallarta is a perfect hub for digital nomads. My neighborhood, Versalles , is home to quaint coffee shops and diverse restaurants. I spend most of my days chasing good wifi aka working in a cafe. I grab dinner at the taco place near the hostel tacos for around a dollar or cook at the hostel. At around pm, I walk to the beach for sunset. At night, I hang out with friends or chill with hostel roommates. On the weekends I adventure out. Nothing too crazy. There are drag bars and clubs, rainbow flags, and men in tight speedos galore. Paradise, no? There are tons of fun day trips from Puerto Vallarta accessible by bus or water taxi. You can head to popular destinations like Sayulita, San Pancho, Tequila, and more by bus. Or, secluded beach destinations like Yalapa and Mayto. Last weekend, I took a trip to a small beach town called Mayto on the coast about an hour and a half from PV. I left my computer at home and went off the grid for two nights. I camped on the beach under the full moon and swam naked in the ocean. I was reminded of the importance of unplugging and enjoying this vida loca crazy life. Pass it on. I am apartment hunting with Sarah, my friend who inspired me to come to Puerto Vallarta. I met her on Instagram about a year ago. She also backpacked Central and South America by herself. We have loads in common and have since decided to be temporary roomies in Puerto Vallarta. Where do you find an apartment in Puerto Vallarta? Lots of places! Most people use Facebook groups to find month-to-month or long-term leases. Most of the people posting on the Facebook groups are local realtors. They can help you in your search. There are multiple options especially in the Versalles neighborhood, north of downtown. How much are the rentals in Puerto Vallarta? We looked at five or so apartments. When I got to Puerto Vallarta, those doubts went away. You know those moments where time stops? I feel at peace. We visit PVR every May except for due to Covid and one day want to go back to stay for a long while. We visited El Tuito on one trip. Had to sneak it home in a cheap tequila bottle for the tax seal. Amazing food, great live music, and wonderful scenery! Lived in Nayarit for over a decade, my advise, get out of tourist areas like Vallarta and experience real Mexico. You never really experience Mexico when you are surrounded by Americans, Canadians, Brits, and people paid to serve the never ending train of tourists etc.. Chacala, Guayabitos, San Blas, San Pancho, even Bucerias are all much nicer beaches, better priced, better food and more authentic. If you want to get real adventurous find mexcaltitan. With picturesque beaches , a vibrant culture, and fun nightlife, this is definitely one of the best places to visit in Mexico. On a night out in PV, you can take your pick between chilled-out beach bars, hidden cocktail joints, local craft breweries, LGBT-friendly bars, and pulsating nightclubs. There are so many choices here that you can bar hop on every night of your trip and barely scratch the surface. I did the backbreaking work of sipping margaritas on the beach and rocking out with local bands at night just for you. The thing about Puerto Vallarta nightlife is that it actually kind of starts during the day. After all, this is a beach town. Some beach bars require a minimum consumption in order to use their umbrellas and sun loungers. Instead, I chose some of my favorite beachfront joints that have reasonable prices and no minimum spend. Located just south of the pier on Los Muertos, this is one of the top Puerto Vallarta bars on the beach. Swell is a great place to go in the afternoon for a casual lunch and some drinks. This bar closes around sunset, so go wash the salt and sand off and get ready for the evening. Or promptly pass out from too much sun and tequila. Your call! They have a few tables in the sand here with a fantastic view of the pier and sunset. Thanks to its location and views, Cuates y Cuetes is usually busy around dinnertime. This is a guide to Puerto Vallarta nightlife. In my humble opinion, this is the best option for beachside Puerto Vallarta nightlife. As with the other beach bars, El Solar is busy both day and night. Unlike the others on this list, though, the party goes late here on the weekend. They usually have live music on Friday and Saturday night as well as on Sunday afternoon. The city also hosts a massive pride week every May that draws in thousands of visitors. This place is really easy to find. Just walk to the end of Los Muertos beach and look for the — you guessed it — blue chairs. They have a great view here and are known for their excellent service. This is hands down one of the most fun gay bars in Puerto Vallarta to party. Every single time I walk by Mr. The dance floor is always bumping and the drinks are always flowing at Mr. One of the best things about partying at Mr. Flamingo is that you get such a nice mix of people here. Locals and tourists, gay and straight, old and young — everyone can appreciate a fun night out at this classic Puerto Vallarta bar. Just a few doors down from Mr. Flamingo is another one of the best gay bars in Puerto Vallarta, La Noche. Upstairs is a 2-level rooftop garden with some fantastic views of the town. Los Muertos Brewing is one of the best Puerto Vallarta bars for a slice, a pint, and whatever sports game is on. A recent addition to the Puerto Vallarta nightlife scene is the fantastic El Colibri. Their outdoor garden seating area with a fountain definitely has a bit of a jungle vibe to it. In a town full of bars pouring the same old cocktails, this place is a breath of fresh air. Sounds delicious, right? Famous for having the best martinis in town, Twisted Palms has been a staple in the Puerto Vallarta nightlife scene for 11 years now. BLP is one of the best places to start a night out in Puerto Vallarta. Be sure to come here hungry as they serve the plates loaded with fries and coleslaw. Players has very reasonably priced drinks, delicious burgers, and a few TVs so they can accommodate different sports fans. They have live music at night from time to time as well, so stick around and rock out. In addition to the terrace full of TVs, they have a pool table downstairs. This is definitely one of the best bars in Puerto Vallarta for music lovers. While I enjoy Puerto Vallarta nightlife, I must say that my biggest complaint is a lack of options for live music. Local noise ordinances have forced several places to stop hosting bands, causing some spots to close entirely. If you get worn out by all the EDM and reggaeton coming out of all the other bars, this is the spot to come grab a cold beer and throw up the rock hands. Most of the bars in this guide are located in the Romantic Zone, as that area is the heart of Puerto Vallarta nightlife. La Casa de Hugo is located in the Versailles neighborhood just inland from the hotel zone. After dinner, be sure to stick around to party it up in this classic dive bar. It gets packed to the brim on the weekend, mostly with locals. This is the perfect place to practice your Spanish. After all, some of my best nights out in Puerto Vallarta have ended right here with some hilarious drunken sing-a-longs, and I highly recommend you do the same. First of all, you can request any song and they will find it for you. They also have props like bright neon wigs and air guitars that help turn your performance up to Put your shorts and flip-flops away for a night, dress up and hit the clubs! Here are some of the best places to dance the night away in PV. A newcomer to the Puerto Vallarta nightlife scene, Co-De made an immediate splash. I remember the first time I walked by it on a Friday night and was instantly mesmerized by the scene coming out of there. Second, the high ceilings allow them to bring in aerialists and acrobats. How cool is that?! The way to go here is getting a group together to get a table and bottle service. This place starts late and goes late and is only open from Thursday to Sunday. I tend to spend most of my time in PV in tank tops and flip flops. This club definitely looks like fun, though. This oceanfront promenade is full of beautiful sculptures as well as some pretty rowdy nightlife. There are three massive nightclubs located next to each other here — Mandala, La Vaquita, and Zoo. They all get going around midnight and party hard until the wee hours of the morning. Yes, these places are touristy and a bit cheesy, but who cares? Plus, where else in the world are you going to take shots with a guy dressed in a gorilla suit before getting on a giant swing overlooking the ocean? As you can see, your options are basically endless when it comes to Puerto Vallarta nightlife. The choice is yours, amigos. In order to fully enjoy all that this amazing place has to offer, I highly recommend spending at least one week in Puerto Vallarta. This gives you the ability to partake in the wild nightlife a few times, have recovery days on the beach, and still squeeze in a few tours.
