Sihanoukville picks up pieces after gambling chaos - Southeast Asia Globe

Share with others. A lot of tourists never venture far from Siem Reap and the Angkor Temples , but Cambodia has so much more to offer than this one singular experience! We really wanted to explore various different regions of Cambodia, together with throwing in a nice dose of relaxation! We chose to spend the end of our holiday at Koh Rong Samloem island and Otres Beach , to do just that! A perfect way to finish off a great holiday! If you want to travel from Siem Reap to Sihanoukville or vice versa , you have several modes of transport options to choose from: including bus, plane, taxi and mini-bus. Find our 2 Week Cambodia Itinerary here. For more information on a highly recommended Day Tour from Siem Reap, click here. Find out about our glorious Siem Reap Accommodation here. We recommend you visit Otres Beach above Sihanoukville, find out why in our post here. The distance from Siem Reap to Sihanoukville is around km miles by road. It is due to this long distance transfer hours by road that a lot of travellers choose not to travel to Sihanoukville at all. However if you build in a few other destinations such as Kampot and Kep into your trip to the South of Cambodia, the effort to reach this destination will be well worth it! So if you are wondering how to travel from Sihanoukville to Siem Reap, we will outline the various options and hopefully make it easy for you to choose the one that suits you best! Flights from Siem Reap to Sihanoukville or vice versa. It is no surprise that choosing to fly from Sihanoukville to Siem Reap or vice versa is by far the easiest and it actually even happens to be cheaper than the taxi option! Traveling with young kids in tow, and I was in my second trimester of pregnancy, I can vouch for the ease of choosing the flight option, and I believe it is worth every dollar! Currently, there are two different airlines offering affordable flights from Siem Reap to Sihanoukville. Both domestic airports are pretty small. I think we went through the whole check-in and baggage scan process in about 10 min at Siem Reap. Sihanoukville airport is even smaller as you can see in the picture below! One thing I should point out is that whilst you can get some basic quick food at Siem Reap domestic airport, your choices at Sihanoukville is pretty limited to a muffin or two, a croissant or some sandwiches, so I would recommend eating prior to arriving at the airport! We chose to fly with Cambodia Angkor Air. This airline has the best reputation out of the airlines you get to choose from, the reviews I read all mentioned that it is the safest flight option as well. We had a really smooth flying experience. No complaints, the plane was on time, no issues at all. The typical plane for this flight is the propeller-style planes. It is important to note that your overhead compartment to store your carry on will most likely be smaller than normal our bag could not fit in there at all , so think about what you can book in instead! There is generally only one flight a day from Siem Reap to Sihanoukville, and then a flight back from Sihanoukville to Siem Reap. So a choice of times will be limited. Banyon Airlines is a newer airline that also offers flights at similar pricing to Cambodia Angkor Air. It is worth comparing prices and flight times. Another option is to travel by bus from Sihanoukville to Siem Reap or vice versa. Whilst we did not use the bus services on this trip, we did give bus travel a tester on a journey from Phnom Penh to Kep later in our holiday. Unfortunately, your choice of a direct bus from Siem Reap to Sihanoukville is very limited. If you would like to have a direct transfer, your only option is the night bus from Siem Reap to Sihanoukville and the company you need to book with; Virak Buntham; has a dreadful reputation for lying to travellers, as well as being incredibly unsafe drivers too. So I wouldn't recommend them! Where to purchase a ticket: You can purchase tickets easily from any tour company around the city, your hotel will be able to help you out with organising tickets too. Or a really handy site — BookMeBus. Nice and easy! Another great option is Giant Ibis who has a great reputation! Again you can simply use BookMeBus. Another choice of travel from Sihanoukville to Siem Reap is via taxi! Another benefit to a taxi over a bus is that you can ask them to stop whenever you need to have a toilet break! A taxi from Siem Reap to Sihanoukville will generally take around 10 hours to get from point A to point B. I honestly personally would pay the extra money and simply hop on a plane for this leg of the journey! Usually I love ground travel, but hours is a long time out of your holidays to simply get from point A to B. But above all else, make sure you avoid taking the night bus option! Your safety is important, as well as your comfort, if you can afford the plane ticket, do it I say!! Have an awesome time on your holiday!! Long white banners hang from the green construction netting erected around the shell of an unfinished building. Please help decide the future for us workers, and our salary, the wages we earned through sweat and blood, and let us go home. After the Cambodian government announced its crackdown on online gambling, many construction sites stopped. In a past life, Sihanoukville was a seaside holiday town where residents could make a bustling trade on both domestic and Western tourists. That Sihanoukville has largely been replaced, swallowed under a wave of primarily Chinese investment in a new metropolis of hotels and casinos which catered to a bottomless appetite for online gambling back on the Chinese mainland. However, after the Cambodian government moved last summer to ban Internet gambling — at the behest of Chinese leader Xi Jinping — that investment fervour ran aground, leaving the city beached in a heap of construction debris and concrete shells of now-dubious developments. But as the casino business lost big under the government online gambling ban, many new Chinese arrivals flooded out of the city, if not the country. It was always hard to pin down the exact numbers of Chinese nationals actually living in Sihanoukville, much less working in the online gambling industry, but Lee said there were rumours within the industry that as many as , online gambling workers had at some point been employed in the city over the past two years. Many of them lived in the hotels built above casino floors, or in rented rooms leased out at inflated rates by Cambodian landlords. They also patronised the businesses that emerged catering to this online gambling workforce — shopping at Chinese retailers and boutiques, and spending time at the karaoke centres, hot-pot restaurants and massage parlours. Once they left in droves late last year, those businesses were left floundering. Nikkei reported earlier this month the results of a Chinese business association survey that found restaurants have shut down in the aftermath of the ban. At the heart of the contraction, local media cite provincial labour department data revealing 56 of 75 registered casinos have closed since the ban. Now, the challenge is on to put the pieces of the crumbling city back together, both to ease local pain and to save face for the upcoming ASEAN Summit, set to be held in the city in late While construction on many high-rise buildings has stalled or been abandoned outright, the land below is alive with a crush of activity. Signs downtown depicting the results of these efforts show an urban core of cleanliness and modernity. But for the time being, while construction is ongoing, the sewers remain open streams along the roadside, the streets are blasted to rubble and dirt, and city dwellers are left to enter their homes and businesses over crude plank bridges spanning the ditches below — many of which are filled with foul-smelling water. Local Cambodian-owned businesses, particularly those in downtown Sihanoukville, have been doubly hit in the past two years, first by spiking rents and then by the turmoil of the ongoing construction effort. Some of these businesses are improving their odds of survival by banding together in organisations like the Sihanoukville chapter of the Cambodian Chamber of Commerce. In mid-January, Okhna Vann Sokheng, elected head of the Chamber, opened a roundtable meeting of local business owners to discuss the many pressing matters of the day. Throughout the two-hour-plus meeting, the gathered Cambodian business leaders focused on the inevitable question of how the city would proceed from its current state of decay. The wide-ranging discussion hit topics such as garbage-strewn beaches and a lingering feeling of insecurity on the streets, a holdover from the organised crime outfits that had worked in and around the gaming industry. His association is focused now on pulling through the crisis by unifying the private sector, all while lobbying the Cambodian government and the local landowners who rented to Chinese investors. For landowners, Sokheng says the Chamber is asking those who rented to Chinese developers to consider options like forgoing rent for one year to ease the burden of construction. To make that possible, Sokheng is also asking the state to relax taxes on construction materials, in addition to lobbying for extensions to loan repayment periods for those who took on debt to invest in Sihanoukville. But for most others, the drop is a return to much-needed normalcy. The SSEZ is carved into a flat, sun-baked stretch of land not far from the airport. Speaking in Mandarin, Jiang was keen to distance his organisation and the SSEZ from the turmoil in the city, particularly the construction and casino sectors. Those who have opened casinos here have likely cheated people, promised them fake money, caused a lot of social instability, and caused an array of other problems. So the paths that our businesses and theirs have gone down are very different. There will definitely be a painful period, but I would say that in half a year or so, Sihanoukville will be moving forward and on solid footing. The recent developments in Sihanoukville, positive and negative, have exposed areas that were in need of reform; ultimately, things will be better off than they were before. She declined to give her name for fear of backlash, but spoke at length at what the overhaul would mean for her living situation along the foul-smelling canal. A neighbour wandered over to lend her own opinion. Support Us. Careers Contributors Customer Support.
