The marble sculptures that have been survived around the monument are dated to the Early Christian and Byzantine times. The interior of the temple is now adorned with significant portable icons, such as the Virgin Before The Cross, the Saint John the Baptist and the Nativity. The Archaeological Museum of Monemvasia is another interesting destination. It is housed in an historical preserved building, which was initially built as Mosque in the years of Turkish occupation 16th century , reconstructed in a public building in the second Venetian occupation and served as a prison and cafe after the Liberation. The permanent collection of the museum includes finds from the excavations in the area, which are historical evidence of the human activity and the artistic life developed in Monemvasia, from early Christian times until the late Ottoman. You can also visit the house of Yiannis Ritsos , the great Greek poet who was born in Monemvasia. It is located in the entrance on the castle, along with his bust.
