How to drive safely under heavy rain

Anna William

Sudden showers can be as dangerous as icy roads. Heavy rain make road slippery. Visibility also decrease when its heavy rain.so in this kind of weather driver must take precautionary measures.

Here are some tips that explain how to drive in heavy rain.

• Decrease your speed.

You must adjust your driving speed with weather conditions. By doing this , you will have more time to decide what to do when  another car loses control.

• Watch out for aquaplaning

When its rain then friction is reduced. when friction  vehicle slips over the water because of this  grip with the ground is very low. In this case when your car slips then you have to claim and don’t  make any sudden movements and take foot off from accelerator.

• Be aware that roads can be slippery

If there has been no rain for a long time. In dry weather, engine oil and grease dropped on the road. when both engine oil and grease combined with water, it made road more slippery.

• Do not drive directly in large puddles

Don't try to cross large puddles because we don't know the exact depth of that puddles.

• Avoid the edges of the road

In Canada  more roads are designed to be slightly higher at their center with the sides sloped which allow water to run off . So avoid to drive at the edges of the road it will make vehicle Unbalance and in rain its too much risky.

• Check your brakes

If you cross a large puddle, then lightly tap the brake pedal to help dry your brake discs.

• Allow extra travel time

You do not want to be in a hurry - you will probably have to drive more slowly and the traffic will probably be slower. Plan your trip in advance and check weather conditions to see if heavy rainfall is possible.

• Brake earlier with less pressure

In doing so, you will increase the stopping distance between you and the driver in front of you. This will also help you to report more quickly to the driver following you that you are slowing down. A simple rule to follow is to keep a gap of more than three seconds between you and the car you follow in bad weather.

• Do not cross running waters.

These waters can be deeper and present a much stronger current than you think. It is possible that your vehicle is pushed slightly, or even carried away by the current.

• Turn on your headlights

This allows other motorists to better locate you. Avoid using high beams because you could blind other drivers and because more light will be reflected in the raindrops, distracting you further.

• Keep your distance from big trucks or buses

Splashing their tires can obstruct your vision and make it extremely difficult for you to see. You should avoid passing them, but if you absolutely must do it, do it as quickly as possible safely.

• Store when visibility is almost zero

If the rain falls so hard that you can not see anything, find a safe place to tidy up and wait until the downpour stops. Turn on your hazard lights so that the other cars see you on the roadside.

• Prepare a rescue kit

In the worst case scenario, the last thing you want is to not be prepared. By preparing an emergency kit packed with essentials, you can be ready to tackle anything that can happen to you during a heavy rainstorm.

By taking the precautions listed above the next time you experience rainy conditions, you will be able to keep control of your vehicle in the worst situations. Take your time, be patient and get on the side of the road if you have to. Over time, the rain will probably stop and you can continue your journey safely.
