How to develop self-discipline

Certainly many of you have weak self-discipline. Perhaps some of you currently cannot do certain things that you would like to do – for example, play the guitar. You can develop self-discipline in a similar way to how you increase your muscle mass. It may take not only one week or one month but, ultimately, you will make significant progress.

1. Self-awareness.

Discipline is the ability to act according to your convictions, regardless of the current state. Therefore, the first component of self-discipline is self-reflection. Determine what behavior best reflects your goals and values. This process requires self-analysis, and it is best to do it in writing. Make time to write down your goals, dreams, and ambitions. It is especially useful to create a mission statement – this will help you better understand yourself and what you value.

2. Mindfulness.

Self-discipline depends on awareness of your actions and inactions. Think about it. How can you correct your behavior if you are not aware that it is undisciplined?

When you start developing self-discipline, you notice your undisciplined actions: biting your nails, skipping workouts, eating a piece of cake, or constantly checking your e-book. Developing self-discipline takes time, and a key aspect of this process is becoming aware of your undisciplined behavior. Over time, you will notice this awareness earlier before getting into an undisciplined situation.

3. Commitment to self-discipline.

It is not enough to simply write down your goals and values. You must set internal commitments for yourself. Otherwise, when the alarm clock goes off at 5 o'clock in the morning, it will be difficult for you to make the decision to get up and start acting right away. Or when the initial enthusiasm fades, you will postpone your project without completing it.

If you hesitate in your commitment, consciously make the decision that you must fulfill what you committed to - in that very moment and in the same way you planned. Follow the advice to track your commitments. As they say, "what can be measured can be improved."

4. Courage.

Do not set yourself overly difficult tasks. Mood, desire, and passion can become powerful obstacles. That is why self-discipline requires courage. Do not deceive yourself by saying that what is actually difficult or painful is easy to do. Instead, find the courage within yourself to withstand this pain and difficulty. When you start achieving small personal victories, your confidence and courage grow, and along with them, your self-discipline grows.

5. Inner self-talk.

Internal dialogue can often be harmful, but it can also be helpful if you know how to control it. When facing challenges, talk to yourself, encourage and reassure yourself. After all, internal dialogue allows you to remind yourself of your goals, summon courage, support yourself, and help you become aware of tasks. Remember one quote: "The price of self-discipline is always less than the pain of regret." You can write it down and use it in your inner self-talk.
