How to create TON wallet

Welcome to TON!

❤️ We are beginning to introduce users to The Open Network ecosystem. The first step necessary for getting acquainted is creating your own TON wallet. This article will be useful for those who are new to TON and have not yet started interacting with the blockchain.

TON wallets are divided into two types:

• Custodial

• Non-custodial

Custodial wallets are centralized wallets. For example, exchange wallets (CEX, Centralized Exchanges) and Telegram bots such as @xRocket, @CryptoBot, etc. When setting up such a wallet, the user does not actually own it, and access to the assets is through the service interface. If the service rules are violated, the user can be blocked, and access to funds restricted.

Non-custodial wallets are decentralized wallets. When creating such a wallet, the user receives a secret phrase (seed-phrase), and only user fully manage his wallet and the assets on it. A non-custodial wallet cannot be restricted or controlled by anyone from the outside.

☝️ The vast majority of crypto enthusiasts recommend storing most of their assets in non-custodial wallets to avoid situations that could limit access to your funds.

Not Your Keys – Not Your Coins.

👛 Let's look at creating a secure non-custodial TON wallet using the most popular app in the network – Tonkeeper.

1. Go to the official website tonkeeper.com.

2. Choose any convenient version of the app for your device:

  – Mobile version: iOS, Android;

  – Desktop version: macOS, Windows, Linux, or a browser extension;

  – Telegram version, which allows you to create and use wallets as a Telegram mini-app without leaving the messenger.

3. Click "Create New Wallet".

🔐 Secret key (seed-phrase).

Next, you need to find and write down on paper the 24 secret words generated when you create your wallet. These 24 words are the key to your wallet. Only with them can you access your account and all assets in case of disconnection or change/loss of device.

1. Click the ⚙️ Settings icon in the main menu.

2. Then "Backup".

3. "Back Up Manually".

The wallet will present you with a secret key consisting of 24 words. Write these words down with their numbers and keep them in a safe place.

❗️ Safety rules:

• It's advisable to write the secret key on paper in two copies and keep it with your other important documents to avoid losing it.

• Do not take screenshots of the secret key. Do not store it in Telegram's "Favorites" or as a file on your PC.

• Never enter the secret key anywhere except in your non-custodial wallet app.

• If the key falls into someone else's hands, they will gain full access to your wallet.
