How to build model buildings 

Model buildings can be used to complete a diorama, provide background details for a model train, or even help you visualize a complicated construction project. Create a simple design of your building. Trace the planes on your chosen material and cut them by hand. After you have prepared all of the components, it's time to glue them together and finish your project.

Designing Your Building

• Decide on the type of building that you would like to build. You need to know what your model will look like before you begin building it. While you are out and about, take note of the different types of structures to refine your mental picture or to gain inspiration. You can also use your imagination to create your own unique structure. You can create anything you can imagine. Take lots of photos if you want to model a real building. This will help you throughout the entire design process.
• Your first attempt will probably be a simple structure such as a house, barn or another traditional structure. You can try to create elaborate buildings such as mansions and skyscrapers.
• Sketch your building from different angles. Create a rough drawing of your building from all sides using a pencil on a piece of paper. Include at least one roof view, as well as any other design features. You can visualize your building better if you draw it. You can also use it to transfer the individual planes of the structure onto your materials.
• It doesn't need to be perfect. Your sketch will serve as a visual guide to help you cut and assemble the various parts of your model.
• If you are recreating a real structure, scale your model accordingly. Start by measuring the height and the width of the building that you wish to replicate. After you have done this, you can use a conversion chart to convert your measurements into a scale that you will use to construct your model. If you're building your model to a 1/125 scale, for example, it means that if 125 of your models were lined up end-to-end they would equal the length of the actual building. When you build your model at a scale of 1/125, for example, that means it would take 125 models lined end-to-end in order to match the length of an actual building.
• It may be possible to find the exact dimensions of an existing structure by looking at your local building records. Search for "building plans" and enter the name of the city or town you live in, along with the address or name of the building that you are looking for.
