How to Write long Sentences

@IELTS_Council

IELTS Writing Task 2 is the second part of the writing test, where you are presented with a point of view, argument or problem and asked to write an essay in response. Your essay should be in a formal style, at least 250 words in length and you should aim to complete it in under 40 minutes¹.

One of the criteria that your essay will be marked on is coherence and cohesion, which means how well you organise your ideas and connect them with clear transitions and linking words. Writing long sentences can help you achieve this, as long as they are clear, accurate and relevant.

Some of the ways you can write long sentences in IELTS Writing Task 2 are:

- Use a variety of sentence structures, such as simple, compound and complex sentences. This will show your range of grammar and avoid repetition.

- Use subordinate clauses to add more information or explanation to your main clause. For example, "Although some people argue that zoos are beneficial for animals, I believe that they are cruel and unnecessary because they deprive them of their natural habitat and freedom."

- Use relative clauses to modify nouns or pronouns. For example, "The government should invest more money in public transport, which would reduce traffic congestion and pollution."

- Use coordinating conjunctions (and, but, so, etc.) to join two independent clauses. For example, "Some people prefer to live in the countryside, but I prefer to live in the city because there are more opportunities and facilities."

- Use transitional words or phrases (however, therefore, moreover, etc.) to show the relationship between your ideas. For example, "Some people think that technology has a negative impact on society. However, I disagree with this view because technology has many benefits for education, health and communication."
