How to Use Portal Bridge to Move Tokens Between Chains

Portal Bridge lets you move supported tokens between blockchains such as Solana and Ethereum. It is a crypto bridge app built on Wormhole, which carries transfer messages between chains. You send a token from one chain and receive the corresponding asset on another, if that token and route are supported.

What do you get from a bridge transfer?

You get an asset in a wallet on the destination chain. A Portal Bridge transfer helps when your tokens are on Ethereum but you need to use them on Solana, or the other way around. The exact token you receive matters as much as the amount.

Some routes deliver a wrapped token: a version backed by tokens held on its original chain. Others can deliver a native token, issued directly on the destination chain. Check the receiving app’s required token before sending; two tokens called USDC may have different contracts and may not be interchangeable there.

How does the transfer work?

On a standard Wormhole wrapped-token route, the source chain locks the original tokens. If you are sending wrapped tokens back toward their original chain, it burns them instead. Burning removes that wrapped version from circulation so the original tokens can be released.

Wormhole Guardians watch the source transaction. Once at least two-thirds sign its message, they produce proof that the destination chain can check. Redeeming that proof releases the original token or creates its wrapped version for the recipient.

Redemption may take a second wallet transaction. On a route with a relayer, a service submits that transaction for you and charges for doing so. This is the main steps-versus-cost trade-off: manual transfer means two on-chain transactions to handle, while a relayed transfer usually asks you to submit one.

How do you choose and complete a transfer?

Start with the asset you need at the destination, then work backward to the token you hold. Confirm the chain, token form, amount and receiving wallet address before approving anything. A bridge moves value between chains; it cannot fix a transfer sent to the wrong recipient.

For a Portal Bridge Solana to Ethereum transfer, check that the receiving token is the one your next app accepts. Portal Bridge lets you transfer supported tokens between those chains once you have chosen the asset you need. Keep enough of each chain’s fee token available if the route requires you to finish the transfer yourself.

Say you hold 100 USDC on Ethereum and need native USDC on Solana. Check that the proposed route delivers native USDC, rather than a wrapped version, before judging the quote by speed or cost. If the receiving app accepts only native USDC, a cheaper wrapped-token transfer does not finish your task.

  • Check the source and destination chains, including the recipient address on the destination.
  • Check the destination token’s identity, not only its name or symbol.
  • Check the amount expected to arrive after any route charges.
  • Save the source transaction record and confirm redemption on the destination chain.

If the source transaction succeeds but the tokens have not arrived, check whether redemption is still pending. Do not start the same transfer again merely because the destination balance has not updated.

What sets the cost and time?

Portal Bridge transfer fees depend on the route and the two chains involved. Gas is the fee paid for a blockchain transaction; you may pay it on the source and again on the destination for manual redemption. A relayed route can add a service charge in exchange for handling that second transaction.

Compare the amount due to arrive, not only the first fee shown. For example, a $100 transfer with $7 in source gas and $1 in destination gas costs about $8 before any relay charge. Those figures are illustrative: network demand, token approvals and the chosen route change the total.

Time depends on the source transaction settling, Guardian signatures and completion on the destination chain. A fast quote is useful only if it delivers the right token. Choose the route that delivers the token you need at an acceptable total cost and number of steps.
