Gather the necessary equipment: You will need a slump cone, a tamping rod, a scoop or shovel, a tarp or a flat, clean surface, and a measuring tape.

  • Prepare the slump cone: Moisten the inner surface of the slump cone to prevent the concrete from sticking. Place the cone on a level, stable surface, and ensure it is clean and free from any debris.
  • Fill the cone with concrete: Fill the cone with freshly mixed concrete in three equal layers. Each layer should be compacted using a tamping rod. Consolidate each layer by giving 25 strokes evenly distributed over the cross-section of the concrete.
  • Strike off the excess concrete: After filling and compacting the final layer, strike off the excess concrete from the top of the cone using a trowel or straight edge. Make sure it is leveled with the top edge of the cone.
  • Lift the cone and measure the slump: Carefully lift the slump cone vertically in a smooth, upward motion, without any twisting or lateral movement. Keep the cone steadily in place for a moment to allow the concrete to settle.
  • Measure the slump: Use a measuring tape or a ruler to measure the difference in height between the original height of the cone and the height of the concrete slump. The slump is the amount of vertical settlement of the concrete.
  • Interpret the slump result: The slump value indicates the workability and consistency of the concrete. Different construction projects may have specific slump requirements, so consult the project specifications or relevant standards to determine if the slump falls within the acceptable range.
