How to Design a Ghost Spider Costume

Gwen Stacy is a smart, sassy superheroine who knows how to handle herself. Whether she's Spider-Gwen, the sassy lady of the 616 universe or Ghost-Spider, the wraithlike traveler from across the multiverse, she always has a plan for every situation and she's never scared to jump in and fight. Her attitude and swagger make her one of Marvel's most popular female heroes.

But it's the costume design that really makes her stand out from the crowd. Whether it's her dark, black and white outfit with electric pops of purple and neon blue or her more neutral look from the Into the Spider-Verse event, there's something about the colors that just pop off the page and instantly grab our attention. One of Gwen's creators, writer/artist Jason Latour, recently took to Twitter to explain the process of designing her uniform, and it's a masterclass in the passionate marriage between graphic design and costuming that lies at the heart of every truly iconic superhero costume.

Latour explains that they needed to balance the three things that drive costume design: the need for the outfit to be recognizable as their version of a character; the need for it to have a strong silhouette and be easy on the eyes; and the need for it to be distinct from Spider-Man's uniform. He also discusses the importance of balancing the use of color and how they used shadows, highlights and negative space to make her costume pop off the page.Ghost spider costume
