How to Clean and Maintain Your TWS Earbuds Properly

Sitting in or near the ear every day, earbuds pick up more grime than most people realise, earwax, sweat, dust, and general daily buildup, all of which can quietly affect both sound quality and hygiene over time. A little regular care keeps true wireless stereo earbuds performing and feeling like new for far longer than neglecting them entirely.

1. Clean After Every Few Uses, Not Just When Visibly Dirty

Earwax and oils build up gradually and aren't always obvious until they've already affected sound quality or comfort. Making a quick wipe-down part of your routine every few days, rather than waiting until buildup is visible, keeps both the earbuds and your ears consistently cleaner.

2. Use a Soft, Dry Brush on the Speaker Mesh

The small mesh covering the speaker is where debris tends to collect most, and it's also the most sensitive part to clean. A soft-bristled brush, like a clean, dry toothbrush, gently swept across the mesh removes trapped dust and wax without pushing it further into the speaker itself.

3. Wipe Down Ear Tips With a Damp Cloth

Silicone ear tips are the part in most direct, prolonged contact with your skin, so they benefit from regular cleaning with a slightly damp, lint-free cloth. Avoid soaking them or using harsh chemicals, which can degrade the silicone material and affect how well it seals over time.

4. Never Submerge Them in Water

Even earbuds with a decent IP rating for sweat and splash resistance generally aren't designed to be fully submerged. Most wireless stereo earbuds should be cleaned with a barely damp cloth rather than rinsed under a tap, since water can still work its way into charging contacts or internal components over repeated exposure.

5. Keep the Charging Case Clean Too

Dust and lint collect inside the charging case just as easily as on the earbuds themselves, and debris on the metal charging pins can lead to inconsistent charging. A dry cotton swab run gently across the contacts every so often prevents this from quietly affecting battery performance.

6. Let Them Fully Dry After Sweaty Workouts

After exercise, wipe away sweat and let the earbuds air dry fully before putting them back in the case. Sealing damp earbuds inside a closed case traps moisture, which can affect both the electronics and the ear tips over time, and creates an environment where bacteria can build up more easily.

7. Replace Ear Tips Periodically

Silicone ear tips wear out and lose their shape over months of daily use, even with regular cleaning. Most manufacturers include spare tips in the box, and swapping them out every few months keeps both fit and hygiene at their best, especially for anyone using their wireless earbuds every single day.

8. Store Them Properly Between Uses

Tossing earbuds loose into a bag or pocket exposes them to lint, dust, and physical damage that a proper case avoids entirely. Getting into the habit of returning them to the charging case immediately after use, rather than setting them down elsewhere, protects both the hardware and keeps them charged and ready for next time.

9. Keep Firmware Updated Alongside Physical Care

Maintenance isn't purely physical. Checking the companion app periodically for firmware updates ensures you're getting any bug fixes or performance improvements the manufacturer has released, which works alongside regular cleaning to keep the earbuds performing at their best for as long as possible.

The Bottom Line

A few minutes of regular maintenance goes a long way toward keeping earbuds sounding good, fitting comfortably, and staying hygienic over months and years of daily use. Building these small habits into your routine costs almost nothing and meaningfully extends the life of the pair you already own.
